Having lived for the last 4 years in south west london suburbia - Wifey and I have decided to up sticks and move further out.

We are looking to move to Guildford as its:

1) near her folks - no nippers yet but thinking of the babysitter potential... scratchchin
2) on the A3 for both escaping/getting up to town (I work in Hammersmith)
3) decent trainline into Waterloo (If I move jobs in the next few years its highly likely to be based in the West End)

So - whats it like to live?

Commuter trains absolutely rammed?
Traffic a nightmare in rush hour? - (i plan to still drive in to work)

Were looking to be near-ish the station with easy access to the A3 Onslow Village-ish...

would be really useful if anyone can give any advice!
I live just the other side of Guildford and have been bum raped seven times in the past 4 days. Just my bad luck I suppose.....

It's an expensive part of the world - the train car parks are full, the trains are full, the high street is full, the schools are full. So move with caution and your eyes wide open!

I drive in and out of central London every day - I set off at 5.30am and am in the West End in an hour. Hammersmith would be easy - do a lennie left at Roehampton, you'd miss the worst of it.

An interesting move would be South of Liphook. It's always been dirt cheap south of the big cross roads - but they be buildin' a bypass! Snick in now and you could find a property that increases in value - but maybe Liphook is a fraction too far out for you....

I lived in Waterden Road in Guildford for nearly a year, which is fairly central to the town.

A lovely part of the world.

I live in Elstead, which is a little bit further beyond Godalming. There's not much around here, really - just a little too quiet (I lived in Portsmouth before this).

Luckily I don't have to commute - so I don't really know how bad it is from here (occasionally I have to go places, but it's not not normally that bad).

Depends if you want to live in a big town, a small town with most facilites or a smaller village?

If you are looking to make some money on your property, then Bordon or Aldershot are places to look as the Army is moving out and the old garrison housing is being knocked down for new housing - and it is cheaper than the surrounding areas!
Bordon is not far from Liphook/Haslemere stations or Farnham/Alton stations.

Also, with the Hindhead tunnel being built at present, any housing further south along the A3 is likely to increase in price once it is open in 2011.

If you are scouting about the place go careful on the Hogs Back (between Guildford and Farnham) they ALWAYS seem to be speed trapping and it a lovely long piece of duel carriage way so very easy for the speed to creep up.
Really? I've never seen any mobile police cameras up there and I drive up there all the time

See them about 30% of the time I drive down it. Even on the bridge going into Guildford on where it goes to 50 at 10pm on Sunday night. Not nice.

Try the weekdays then.

Probably 50% of my trips in the past two years over the 'back have been monitored by scamera.
