hamster euthanasia - an ethical question

20mins at Gas Mark 6 should sort it out.
200 degrees C is too hot for meat that age. It needs long, slow cooking to bring out the flavour. An old fashioned "hamster au vin" recipe should do the trick, with a little star anise to add a Chinese twist and bring out the umami.

What about taking it to a Vet?
That's what I would do..
If it's upsetting the Mrs enough get her to pay for the vet to gas it to death in a lunch box. It'll probably be about £40 I guess given it cost us £28 just for a vet to go. "Yep thats a sick hamster". Mind you it took them 30 mins to come to that conclusion.... nice vet thoughThat's what I would do..
i have a bottle of butane in the garage and gassing was what i was thinking of.
cardboard box with a hole for the butane hose? surely this is what the vet would do but with a fancier box and gas bottle?

Worst "please help me justify anal hamster shenanigans" thread ever.
But yes, it feels awesome.
Like being bummed by tiny angels...
he can barely move so wouldn't be much fun. the other is still zipping about like he's on speed but has a tendency to taste test [i.e. take a good bite of] anything put in front of him!But yes, it feels awesome.

If you are attached to the animal, or squeamish, you probably want to avoid crunching sounds, mess, or feeling "kickback" from whatever device you use.
Perhaps put it in bog roll tube, duct tape both ends, place inside strong carrier bag, and drop a breeze block on it. A bit of AC/DC at max volume on the iPod should drown out the crunch.

On a serious note the freezer idea is quite a humane suggestion. Just pop him in a tupperware box and put him in the freezer. He'll slowly go to sleep and in a hour it'll be job done.
hadn't thought of that. they do hibernate at anything under 2-3 degrees so being weak this should do it.must remember about him though, have frozen many a bottle of beer that way.........

IT'S A HAMSTER - CONCRETE BLOCK - HEAD - BIN.
It's pretty likely that he's on the way out, but not definite. Friend of mine was recently in the same situation with her son's very elderly hamster - took it to the vet, couple of injections and it's going strong again.
Similarly, I posted a thread a few months back about my 23yr old cat who's terrified of the vet, trying to decide whether a trip to the vet was justified. Made the trip in the end, she's now on tablets for her thyroid and is right as rain.
(As an aside, I had to have a pet rat put to sleep, the vet didn't charge me at all. Really kind chap)
