Living in Guildford?

If you really want to test commuting from Guildford why not move in with the in-laws for a few days and try commuting for real. I'd suggest you include Monday as my experience living near Alton is that the traffic either on SW Trains or the roads is that much heavier. Have you thought about a motorbike? The scameras that always seem to do brisk business are the fixed ones at the top of the A3 before you hit the Kingston by-pass. Good luck, but you are doomed.

If you're prepared to drive to Dorking and park there, you'll get a seat on the slow train (stops everywhere) into London Waterloo. This works well into Hammersmith depending on where you are in Hammersmith: South West Trains to Wimbledon, tube to Putney Bridge, then bus (or walk) up the Fulham Palace Road. An hour door-to-door by public transport.

If driving, allow at least an hour and a half, maybe two, unless you're prepared to leave at 6 am in the morning. Of all the driving routes, the one which seems like the longest of them all (A3, Roehampton, Lower Richmond Road, Putney Bridge, Fulham Palace Road) is actually the fastest.

Good luck with it - Guildford is a nice place to live. Some great driving roads nearby, plus good shops for the Mrs.

I stood from kingston the other day which is about 25 mins its not too bad...

I lived in Burpham for 3yrs and commuted. Guildford was ok but I much prefer Epsom. 20 odd minutes away by car, better lines into london (3 to choose from), much smaller, quieter, less people, relatively close to kingston and croydon shopping centres (but far enough away...). If you want to be in the Guildford area I would choose a village and drive in, although beware - the morning traffic is atrocious.

her folks are actually in west byfleet - on reflection and having spoken to a few folk here at work, I think guildford is likely to be a no-no due to:

1) Traffic levels - a fella used to come up here from farnham and said it could take half an hour just to get through guildford in the rush hour - recons its even worse now....

2) Cost - having looked at whats available for our budget - i think we'd be better to look a little further north - possibly the outskirts of Woking....

any stories to that area?

I live in Woking (Guildfords poor cousin)
It's ok, there are some pretty nice areas to live in but just like anywhere else they can be pretty close to some not so nice ones.

The town centre isn't the greatest for nightlife but there are some decent restaurants about if you look closely. Shopping centre is pretty good as well.

ETA: I'll be looking to relocate a bit further afield in the next 12 months or so but if you're on a budget like me it's not a bad place to be

Also there are loads of direct trains to waterloo from the station, you probably won't get a seat but it only takes 25 minutes

I used to live close to Guildford, and could never live there, which is a shame, as it has some really nice bits.
My main problem was the traffic, weekdays or weekends, it could take you over an hour just to cross the town centre. Parking is also massive problem. Plus as others have said, most of the dross from surrounding towns or the estate seem to converge on the town every day.
I used to live in Haslemere, and would move back there tomorrow. Nice small town feeling, lovely green fields and stuff surrounding it. Plus the local TVR dealer was useful.

You may be better looking at somewhere like Fleet? Even Basingstoke, as some nice bits surrounding it, and is only 50 mins on the train.
