Ben Folds Five - Brick

6 am day after Christmas
I throw some clothes on in the dark
The smell of cold
Car seat is freezing
The world is sleeping
I am numb
Up the stairs to her apartment
She is balled up on the couch
Her mom and dad went down to Charlotte
they're not home to find us out
And we drive
Now that I have found someone
I'm feeling more alone
Than I ever have before
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
they call her name at 7:30
I pace around the parking lot
then I walk down to buy her flowers
And sell some gifts that I got
Can't you see
It's not me you're dying for
Now she's feeling more alone
Then she ever has before
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
off the coast and I'm headed nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
As weeks went by
It showed that she was not fine
They told me son it's time to tell the truth
She broke down and I broke down
Cause I was tired of lying
Driving home to her apartment
For the moment we're alone
She's alone
I'm alone
Now I know it

SAD SONG:

"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky,
But why, why, why can't it be....can't it be mine"

Pearl Jam - Black. Always seems to get me going for some reason.

Those lyrics are so sad, and so true. In fact I have a tears in my eyes now.

Woo hoo… We have some stuffies and poppey-ites!!!!

‘we dig tv , we dig remote control, the furry freak brothers and twilight zone…’

‘I didn’t like you very much when I met you… Now I like you even less!’

‘Don’t give me love and none of that stuff, it’s you’re money I’m after baby’

Classic stuff… Oh and the Neds:

‘Sight for sore eyes, I need an intermission, If looks could kill, I’d kill your television!’

Damn right, although I chose one of their silliest (and most commercial) songs. I would have to rate the Eight Legged Groove Machine as my favourite album.

Another two for me would be:-

Say hey, we don't need today
Stop the world
Stop the world
I'm getting off
I'm leaving

&

Hop hop hop blow blow bubble gum
She tastes of cherryade

The crash test dummies have some fantastic lyrics, most noteably the title track to God Shuffled His feet:

After seven days
He was quite tired, so god said:
"Let there be a day
Just for picnics, with wine and bread"
He gathered up some people he had made
Created blankets and laid back in the shade

The people sipped their wine
And what with God there, they asked him questions
Like: do you have to eat
Or get your hair cut in heaven?
And if your eye got poked out in this life
Would it be waiting up in heaven with your wife?

God shuffled his feet and glanced around at them;
The people cleared their throats and stared right back at him

So he said: "Once there was a boy
Who woke up with blue hair
To him it was a joy
Until he ran out into warm air -
He thought of how his friends would come to see;
And would they laugh, or had he got some strange disease?"

God shuffled his feet and glanced around at them;
The people cleared their throats and stared right back at him

The people sat waiting
Out on their blankets in the garden
But God said nothing
So someone asked him, "I beg your pardon:
I'm not quite clear about what you just spoke -
Was that a parable, or a very subtle joke?

God shuffled his feet and glanced around at them;
The people cleared their throats and stared right back at him

Mmm,Mmm,Mmm,Mmm and I think I'll disappear now are also very good.

Marillion - Kaleigh

Do you remember chalk hearts melting on a playground wall
do you remember dawn escapes from moonwashed college halls
do you remember the cherry blossom in the market square
do you remember I thought it was confetti in our hair

By the way ,didn´t I break your heart
please excuse me ,I never meant to break your heart
so sorry ,I never meant to break your heart
but you broke mine

Kaleigh ,is it too late to say I´m sorry
and Kaleigh ,could we get it together again
I just can´t go on pretending that it came to a natural end
Kaleigh ,oh ,I never thought I´d miss you
and Kaleigh ,I hoped that we´d always stay friends
we said our love would last forever so how did it come to this bitter end

Do you remember barefoot on the lawn with shooting stars
do you remember loving on the floor in Belsize Park
do you remember dancing in stilettos in the snow
do you remember you never understood I had to go

By the way ,didn´t I break your heart
please excuse me ,I never meant to break your heart
so sorry ,I never meant to break your heart
but you broke mine

Kaleigh ,I just want to say I´m sorry
but Kaleigh ,I´m too scared to pick up the phone
to find you´ve found another lover to patch up our broken home
Kaleigh ,I´m still trying to write that love song
Kaleigh ,it´s more important to me now you´re gone
maybe it´ll prove that we were right or to prove that I was wrong

I totally agree. I was coming to the end (against my wishes) of my first ever serious relationship, when I first heard this song. It kind of symbolises the end of it for me, and the fact that there was nothing I could do about it. Not totally helped by the fact that, despite a few relationships since, I've never fully got over her! Ah well. Sigh.

Something about You- Level 42

Now
How can it be
That a love
Carved out of caring
Fashioned by fate
Could suffer so hard
From the games
Played once too often
But making mistakes
Is a part
Of life’s imperfections
Born of the years
Is it so wrong
To be human after all

Drawn into the stream
Of undefined illusion
Those diamond dreams
They can’t disguise the truth
That there is something about you
Baby so right
I wouldn’t be without you
Baby tonight

If ever our love
Was concealed
No one can say that
We didn’t feel
A million things
And a perfect dream of life
Gone
Fragile but free
We remain
Tender together
If not so in love
And it’s not so wrong
We’re only human after all

These changing years
They add to your confusion
Oh and you need to hear
The time that told the truth

You know there’s something about you
Baby so right
I wouldn’t be without you
Baby tonight
Because there’s something about you
Baby so right
I couldn’t live without you
Baby tonight

(counter melody)

Something about you
The way you are so right
I wouldn’t be
Without you here tonight
There’s something about you
The way you are so right
I couldn’t live
Without you here tonight

Pearl Jam do this stuff so well, try:

Once divided, nothng left to subtract
Harsh words when spoken, can't be taken back
He walks on his own, with thoughts he can't help thinking
Futures above, but in the past he's slow and sinking

NOTHING MAN - pearl jam

Heh, The Undertones. I loved that song when I was a kid. That and My Perfect Cousin (was Mars Bar the B-side to it? can't remember)

No, 'Mars Bars' was the B-Side of 'Jimmy, Jimmy'.
'I Don't Wanna See You Again' was the B-Side of Perfect Cousin.

Can I just mention that The Undertones are currently out and about and having just as much fun as they did in the '80s.
No Feargal Sharkey, but, hey, who cares? Damien, John, Mickey and Billy are still awesome and Paul McLoone knocks Feargal into a cocked hat.

Enough of The Undertones commercial.......here's my favourite lyric.

As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,
There's one thing I wanna know:
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

And as I walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry.
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

So where are the strong?
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry.
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

Ironically I like 'You little thief'.........

However, watch Peely's Film about the band (available from all good stores on DVD) and you will understand the whole Undertones story. When Mickey (I think) and Fergal give their differing outlooks on the 'Teenage Kicks' TOTP trip it's a real eye opener.

So Nuggs, wanna see them with me?
