Following SiOsbons thread about Amsterdam. Group of 12 of us are going Prague in April and as no-one has been before would like a few tips on where to go, what bars, eating places etc.
Me and two other guys are taking g/f's so they will want to do some culture stuff as well.

We're all into rock/alternative/indie music too so anywhere that caters for that would be welcome (although I understand from guide books that its the Devils spawn to the Chechs)

I'm going there on 27th May for long weekend on stag do with 10 other people.

All I can say, loads of bar to choose from and it is very cheap (been told that it can be 30p for half litre of beer!!)

Ive been to prague on a stag do aswell. Its a fantastic city. Loads to do and see and the night life is great to. We went just before they joined the EU and it was very cheap im not sure if the prices have gone up. The tram system is great! The crafts people on the King Charles bridge are amazing but watch out for pick pockets. The jewish quatre is a real eye opener. I loved prague!!! i went with the lads but i would like to go back with Mrs richie_few.

We even made it an to the ITV news, they were doing a piece about them joining the eu and they interviewed me and the stag(who was dressed up as a woman) in a bar one night and aired it about a week later! That weekend was a experience ill never forget!!!!!

Just got back last week (had to come home early with chest virus )

Prague IMO is like York in the day and Blackpool at night. Lots to see in the day, and some great activities if you know where to look - Europe's longest kart track, tank driving, machine gun shooting - but not a great deal to do at night that doesnt involve beer or tits. Sightseeing in central Prague itself can be done comfortably in a day IMO.

I went with 16 lads, most of which loved it, but some found it to be pretty tacky (me included to be honest). Two of the guys lived in prague a couple of years ago and say it has changed hugely for the worse. Prices are NOT like they were - beer is generally about £1 a pint, but upto about £5 in some clubs. Wenseslas Square (sp?) is now populated by agressive touts trying to heard you into 'cabaret' clubs (read brothels) who dont seem to take no for an answer (to the point of a big kick-off one night). Most bars we went into had a distinctive 'western' theme.

The brothels are 'interesting' - chatting to one of the madams while some mates did a bit of drilling is one of the best things I did - she was a real character! Hookers are about £70 a pop (allegedly), which is supposedly a big increase over even last year.

Stripclubs to my amazement were more expensive than London! We were pretty picky though, and always payed to extra £10! high quality though.

Meals out of the main town (prague 2 or 3) were excellent and very cheap (about £4 each including drink).

You have close to zero chance of meeting Czech women - they all know that most UK blokes are after one thing! Velvet DISCO was ok, and pretty 'local' - the adjacent Velvet NIGHTCLUB wasnt so good ('NIGHTCLUB' = knocking shop FYI).

In terms of knocking shops - K5 Relax club was good in terms of venue - obviously depending what you are after - although some of the girls there struck me as victims unlike Atlas and Darling who were visably pocketing the money they earned. Altas was good fun - lots of sex shows and stuff as well as birds on a plate. Didnt stay in Darling long but it seemed ok.

The metro is an experience - I have a photo from the bottom of some stairs looking up which has a vanishing point - they are seriously deep - nothing like London!

I went for 4 nights and spent about £500 (inc appartment, but not flights) - a few lads spend over £700, and some got away with £250-300. Certainly not as cheap as I'd been led to believe. Biggest challenge was coming back to work and not throwing money at my secretary!

Funniest thing I saw (aside from 4 lads picking a tout up and running off with him) was a midget prostitute working in 'Darling' - reminded me of Max and Paddy!

I obviously went in lots of brothels - it is perfectly possible to enjoy a beer and watch the scenery - just make sure they know so you dont get the hard sell

Definately, I went with the Mrs and TBH didn't really see any of the seedy side of things. I think that you have to look for it to a certain extent, rather than having it thrust into you face (ooh er) like in Amsterdam.

Had my stag do there almost three years ago now , was just before it started getting over-run with stag parties and many bars will now not allow groups of English people from what I've heard.

We actually did some cultural stuff during the day (in between beers) - and the Castle/Cathedral was good and the tower where the cool astrological clock in the main Old Town Square is worth climbing for a view of the city. Don't bother with the Museum of Torture or Museum of Communism - it's rubbish.

The park around the giant red Metronome (yes, random) gives good views of the city and visit a brewery or two.

There is a roof-top bar at one of the hotels on the Old Town Square which is pricey (by Prague standards) but has good views over the rooftops.

Cheapest place we found for beer was a small cafe, Cafe Vivaldi in the alleys between the Charles Bridge and Old Town Square - we worked out that a half litre of Gambrinus (the best and cheapest of the beers) was about 18p , though that was in 2002, might be 30p now Generally found that the local-looking places down side streets were the cheapest/most welcoming/least hassle.

We got a super curry on one of the streets leading to the Old Town Square - was a nice street with boutiques etc.

Wenceslas Square was a bit too commercial and full of touts for our taste, so we didn't go there much.

In terms of clubs (non-strip - we went to a few of these - watch out for the very small ones especially one near the Charles Bridge on the Castle side advertising 80s go-go girls - we got into some serious trouble there when one of the guys I was with accidentally kicked out a light on the stage as they were encouraging us to use the pole! We went to one mentioned further up this thread - far better, but very expensive), we also searched high and wide for a rock/alternative club, but without much success. There are two clubs on the river by the Charles Bridge which are quite commercial/Western but not too expensive and stay open late (like until well after sunrise) - one which had 'The Biggest Club in Middle Europe' on the side played chart stuff whilst the one next door was more rock - but classic rock/hair rock rather than alternative stuff/metal - but a good laugh nonetheless.

My top 5 Prague do's and don'ts:

1. Don't kick out lights by accident in strip bars, even after they encourage you to slide upside down on the pole. Also, don't then think you can get past the bouncers when they demand £100 for a new lightbulb
2. Do not climb the statues on the Charles Bridge at sunrise - standing on the Virgin Mary's shoulders looks good in photos, but does not endear you to the locals and is very dangerous.
3. Do not eat the street vendor sausages and not much else for 7 days. Although I had little choice as the stag when rules said that any one of the party could foist whatever food on me they wanted too and I had to eat it
4. Do not give the police any lip, especially if you speak Czech - they will give you a clip and they will throw you in the cells to cool off (not me guv'nor).
5. Do watch out for pickpockets - little women working in groups trying to grab your arms. If you are pickpocketed - run after them, wait until they hand your wallet over to the pimp and then punch his lights out before recovering said wallet.

Maybe 5 isn't that advisable, but it worked for us

Have a great time.
