So, weekend in Norfolk at an old friend’s country house – near a place called Burnham Market; lovely! Open fires, red wine, walks on the beach, escaping from London, good people, including several strangers. All the good stuff, basically. Friday night sees some success, and I manage to get some poor deluded woman into bed, and the evening passes satisfactorily. Excellent work Flash; a completely random girl, no comebacks, no issues, no prospect of trouble – a winner! She left on Saturday morning. The perfect result, if you will.

My best friend A arrives at Saturday lunchtime – I had no idea, and she wanted to surprise me. Which is sweet and I am naturally pleased to see her. And so we all went to the pub, walked, cooked, had dinner, drank, played board games, played drinking games, had a great time. She asked me about recent events, and as everyone was happily discussing my ensnarement of the girl from the previous night, the topic came up in conversation. She found whole thing very amusing and was, as ever, amusedly disapproving of my naughty behaviour.

Some hours later she came over and, for some reason or other, she started to discuss the idea of the idea of us being together. For every reason I came up with as to why we shouldn’t (this was my attempt at maturity – and is in spite of my secretly thinking that, bar the best friends issue, we’d be pretty good together), she had an answer as to why we should. Yet, good sense prevailed and we went our separate ways; the friends thing is too much to risk, as we discovered on previous occasions. Rest of weekend went brilliantly, she got a lift home on Sunday, I took the train.

She came over last night for typical DVD session and dinner in front of TV effort, me cooking (regular event – alternate between each others’ houses). I live alone, as housemate has now moved out, and so quite like having folks over.

We spent all evening and all night in bed.

She is lovely. Remember these? Well, fat lot of good all that rationalising did me.

I am stupid and need to be neutered. And I’d just started to do so well.

You must be good at the pulling bit - not much spare in "Chelsea-by-the-sea"!

So was it a BIG mistake with said friend or was she right and you are good together?

Edited to add after further thought that maybe all your saying no meant you were thinking with your head rather than another part, this impressed, she pursued you and it was therefore her choice not yours and that makes things ok(if that makes sense)

I've got a suggestion, Harry

Call me crazy, but you like the girl and want to sh*g her so just go out with her.

Problem solved.

And very flattering to have a girl persuade you to go out with her too, I would imagine.

Me.

No.

Want.

Relationship.

I think.

Anyway, you chaps have brilliantly explored all the options before, and we threshed this all out. This thread was really to give you all an opportunity to laugh at my lack of self control and penchant for messing things up. As I used to do to all my single mates when they screwed up when I was going out with ex-Lady Flash. It's karmic payback time, you see?

Yeah. HATE driving up to West Norfolk; slow, takes ages. And driving back after a weekend of partying on Sunday, with vicious hangover is . Train from King's Cross to King's Lynn takes 2 hours, £33 return. Painless, comfy, and one can get pissed on the way up, and sleep on the way down.

Driving long distances in the South of England is a nightmare these days. Try getting out of London anytime after midday on a Friday, and you'll see what I mean.
