.... many cars were spun off on corners such was the poor driving skill of owners who bought into a propper handling sports car and the tyres were reduced on the front to make this less likely...
Most will never drive it anywhere near its capabilities as they lack the skill to do so, should they try to on the public roads ,a small bump at speed is enough to unsettle the car and set the path in motion for a a 360 multiple spin....
Exactly as you say many cars were spun off in corners by people who had been bought up on FWD front engined hot hatches with traction control. How is this anything but the drivers lack of experience or ability?? Don't get the point you are making? Most will never drive it anywhere near its capabilities as they lack the skill to do so, should they try to on the public roads ,a small bump at speed is enough to unsettle the car and set the path in motion for a a 360 multiple spin....
As for a small bump in the road being enough to induce a 360 spin..... The thing that amazes me about the Elise is it's ability to soak up bumps & undulations and not feel unsettled. By contrast my GT3 positively feels like it's trying to kill me when pushing on on the average bumpy B road, the Elise just takes it in it's stride, making you feel far more confident than in the GT3. With a comment like that & your comments on tyre wear I'm actually beginning to wonder if you've ever driven an Elise, or if you did it's must have been appallingly set-up.
If what you have written is your opinion then fine by me, I haven't driven an s1 only the s2, but it does seem that there may other factors at play here either your capabilities or possibly your old car was not built to the normal standard as other owners have managed to get by.
But the one question that keeps coming into my mind is why has it taken you so long to write this, and why now? (yes I know that's two questions).

Sorry but i haven,t laughed so much in ages MrDextor do you do weddings?? You really are pointless by the way don,t buy a miniclubman , i had one in 1987 and iwas doing 60mph in the snow down the A1 and my windsreen wipers where totally ineffectual and dangerous............. Dear British Leyalnd etc etc
I can't believe mrdexter that on the one hand you allude to your driving prowess and yet you then tell us how little you knew and know now of the Elise and how you are unable to identify the need for a car to have its suspension geometry sorted.
Your car must have been set up appallingly and if you knew the first thing about Elises you'd know that the suspension gometry can be aligned to make the car handle just as you wish (including bumpsteer). Either that or you drive like a total idiot to only get 3k miles from a set of Advans (that's OA48/888 territory).
I'm so glad you don't live in my part of the world - the roads here are safer without you.
You might want to google Metal Matrix Compound too - Do you really believe everything a salesman tells you and then hand over a large um of money without checking. Unbelievable.
Plenty of people have learnt to drive their Elises at and beyond the limit: they do off road driver training and then practice their skills on track not the road and then take more training etc, etc. Don't judge everyone by your standards.
I'm off to find Alfa Romeo's address - my Sud started dissolving in 1982 when it was just four years old......
Do you work in a litigation pactice and are you trying to drum up business for some sort of Toyota type 'blame the manufacturer as I can't drive' type of action? You're in the wrong place mate - take a hike.

Rule 1 seems to be dont dish the s1 or it offends and will provoke insult...
i supose it is an affordable to all sports nowadays....
my car was meticulously maintained and shimmed several times in my ownership and obviously the tyres wore perfectly cimetrically ...plain simple wore and my specialist always wondered what i was doing with them, insistent they should do 10000 plus miles...
to be perfectly frank with you all, i enjoyed driving the elise, didnt enjoy the high maintenance costs, bolts dropping off/slackening, and the appaling wet weather driving inside the car but i assume lotus bothered to iron these defects out in the s2 ....
Take a balenced rational view of what i ve written and you ll realise my motive is probably to aid anyone contemplating the purchase of an s1 rather than offend anyone...
would i buy one again....on a budget of 10000 for a sports car and knowlageable of what to expect and a rigorous inspection...maybe, but on a wim.

..erm...admittedly I'm no expert in this field, but if the geometry is setup correctly (aka factory settings), I believe the insides should wear quicker than the outsides. Happy to stand corrected by any experts though.Edited by SeanyD on Thursday 1st April 13:35

Dish? I assume you mean 'dis' as in 'yo' dissin' ma bh muthaf*cka?'. Nobody complains about reasonable critisism. My Elise leaks and rattles, the boot release snapped etc. We all know it has it's foibles. What people don't appreciate is when people spout bks as if it is fact.mrdexter said:

I very much doubt anyone said your tyres would last 10,000 miles.mrdexter said:

High maintenance costs? You're in for a shock if you get an Ultima.mrdexter said:

If this is your motive, why has it taken you so long to share this nonsense?mrdexter said:

Why? It is an utter death trap apparently!Oh, and you may want to have a read of this to help you form comprehensible posts:
As has been said before the only thing we love as much as driving our little elises is talking about them (and trying to convince the wife that yes you really do need that larini supersport system), however all you seem to of done is come out with a load of gripes that in my eyes should of either been sorted out when you had the car or if you couldn't be rs'd to do this (which appears to of been the case) sell it. I cannot understand why you would still be complaining about the car so long after you owned it, so please enlighten us on your angle (or just go away).
I don't mean to be short with you but you do just seem to be complaining due to either boredom or to excercise your fingers.

Ah well...
i supose if you re elise is your god you will resort to insults should it be critisised, but having lived next door to someone who thought it acceptable to make noise throughout the night and have him tell me "he was here first"... along with my dealing with the public in their own homes ..
nothing in this world suprises me and if my grammer/ spelling offends , Handbags at ten paces !!!!
All thoughts of ,worn seats at 15000,pitted aluminium, steamy windows, loose undertray, window rubbers that go down with the windows, headgasket worry, worn tyres , inefective brakes, wet interiour, detatched bonnet and engine hood and trying to find a good specialist not to mention lemming elise lovers who dish my experience put well behind me....

We can only assume you haven't driven it in the wet then, don't you realise just how much your car sucks. It's a death trap waiting to happen! mrdexter said:

Had absoloutely none of those problems in 33k of hard road/track and Sprint use. I was surprised by the total reliability of the car.i supose if you re elise is your god you will resort to insults should it be critisised, but having lived next door to someone who thought it acceptable to make noise throughout the night and have him tell me "he was here first"... along with my dealing with the public in their own homes ..

I'm too old to be a fan boy of anything but your views are posted far to long after your ownership to be worth anything other than 'noise' from someone obviously very bored.
Please find another axe to grind: you're making an arse of yourself.
