I am thinking about swapping my standard ratios for a close ratio set up for competition use...any idea how big or even straightforward a job this is in an S1 Elise? Thanks

Presumably changing the diff is going to be easier than actually changing the ratios in the 'box. Swapping your 3.9 diff out for a 4.2 would give you 7% reduciton in overall gear ratio.

i'm interested too. i have a 6 speed version and gearing is too high.
i guess with a transverse engine in a tight bay it's not going to be easy?

The Rover PG1 gearbox was used in many different cars with many different ratio sets and final drives. The commonest swap in a regular S1 is to fit a B4BP from an S1 111S or a regular S2 Elise. These come up on eBay fairly often.

PG1 gearbox codes and ratios are explained here: http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Rover_PG1_gearbox
