Press the down arrow.

I find you have to press it twice and the first one wakes the screen and second saves the clip. It protects the file your currently recording and the one before and one after.

Then when I get there I select delete all and it leaves just the protected ones. Saves me scrolling.

I have just started looking into the idea of a dash cam system. Now im useless with technology so please bear with me on probably a basic question, ive read back about 5-6pages but don't have time to go through all 128 ish of them!

My ideal solution is:

Hardwired dash cam
Everytime I get in and drive it just records automatically
Motion detection whilst not driving would also be useful

Do the cameras just record automatically everytime the car is used and start to re-write over the previously saved information on the SD cards that are installed in them?

Still looking for the best deal on an 0805 if anyone can point me to a reputable seller, or is Amazon best?

Hi, yes most of them do exactly that, except the motion detection whilst parked needs a slightly different installation. The most common installation is to start when you switch on the engine and stop just after you switch off again.

Power generally comes from a "switched" circuit (i.e. one that comes on with the ignition). Many of us start by having a plug in the 12v socket / cigar lighter socket, and the wire from there tucked into the windscreen screen surround.

If you're new and just want to try it out to see how it goes, then a good basic budget one is the Mini 0801, usually from Amazon. It's been coming down in price, it was £100 about a year ago, but now around half that.

The 0801 needs a Class 6 Samsung micro SD card (not a class 10), 16Gb is enough for most drivers (about £8 to £10).

If you don't fancy the 12v socket then you can get a piggy-back fuse and feed the wire from the fuse box back to the screen, not as difficult as it sounds.

Enjoy!

Appreciate the reply, so the mini 801, blackvue or roadhawk if hardwired would simply just start recording when I start the car and start driving?

What happens when the memory card is full do they just start to automatically overwrite whats been recorded already?

Thanks

Fitted a 0801 yesterday, £45 from Amazon with a 16g memory card included, doddle to fit and run the wire around the roof and A post, all set up quickly and easily, to the poster above, yes when the card gets full it starts over writing the earliest recorded footage in a loop fashion, starts recording when powered up when starting the car, and stops recording when turning the ignition off.
Mines plugged into the cigarette lighter socket, but if you prefer hardwiring into a switched ignition feed it will operate the same.

Motion detection - the issue is the time delay between something happening, and the camera starting to record often means you miss what actually happened. I guess it depends what you're hoping to catch though, like if someone in lingering around then you may be lucky. Also, these cams aren't really designed to be powered on 24/7. And if you park in the full sun and the cam is powered up you might cook it. Personally, I wouldn't recommend motion activated recording.
If you wire the cam via an ignition switched power feed, then it will start recording when you turn on the ignition and for a short (configurable) time when you switch off. But you really need to decide if you really want motion activated recordings or automatic recording when the ignition is on - you can't really have both because one relies on a constant power feed, and the other starts up when it get's power from the ignition.
All (proper) dash cameras support loop recording, i.e the oldest clip is erased and replaced with the latest. This is another reason why motion recording isn't recommended...if you're lucky enough to catch some action, you might end up overwriting it with people walking past or even the sun going behind the clouds and casting (image changing) shadows etc.

Ok good advice many thanks.

Will just stick with loop recording and forget about the motion detection, my car is covered most nights anyways so that would be a useless feature over night, its just whilst its parked up anywhere during the day it be handy to have.

Going to start reading up on which camera to give a try with next. I need something that can withstand high operating temperatures with living in the middle east!

Quite interested in the Mini 0806 to start with, regarding the below features however:

support motion detection
support LDWS(Lane departure waring system)
support FCWS(Forward collision warning system)

Assuming the motion detection could be de-activated if I wanted to?

Do LDWS and FCWS have to be on at all times or are they optional in the menu? I hate additional driver aids which is why I have a relatively basic car with no screen in it to distract me and the likes of lane departure in cars drives me insane.

Lee, I have posted a few times on this thread and have spent ages umming and aahing about which one to buy, but I finally bought an 0805 from http://www.carcamerashop.co.uk/mini-0805.html
Great customer service - I got an immediate email reply to a question I had about it - and really quick delivery.
I may have been able to get an 'Ebay' one cheaper from China, but the promise of a UK supplied one with full 12 month warranty from a reputable supplier was the deciding factor.

OK, well you need something that uses a capacitor as the backup power source rather than a lithium battery then.
Lithium batteries die very quickly in heat (they can even explode, but I've not heard of this actually happening?).
I would highly recommend the G1W capacitor version like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/G1W-C-FULL-HD-1080P-Car-...
For the money, I think they are excellent.

If I hard wire it can I not just forget about batteries altogether?

No, it needs to finish writing the current file to the SD card or you can end up with a corrupted file/card. It only takes a few seconds to do this but it needs at least one of the capacitors to provide enough run-time to close everything down nicely once the external power is removed.

Apologies if this question has been asked before, but having constantly dipped in and out I can't see that it has.

Is there a recommended/easy/preferable way of covering various cars? I'm interested in a mini 803/805 (like many I was waiting for the 806 but early reviews aren't favourable). Can you easily remove the main unit if you've bought multiple 'base stations' etc, or is it simply a case of having to buy multiple cameras?

Many thanks

As long as you have the fitment in all cars then the camera can be easily transferred between vehicles smile

Brilliant. Thank you.

Any ideas if that's true of all the 08XX series? As noted 803/805 are most likely purchases.

This is one I used in a race in 1968.

It wasn't that successful, & we gave the idea away.

I THINK they all use the same mount across the line so you could upgrade and not have to change mount. I just got the 0801 to see whether it was worth it, might upgrade at some point.

Had my first near miss recorded by my MINI 0805 this afternoon. Nowhere to go on the right, tbh honest was waiting for the scrape

GPS and MPH arent working, and havent since i got it a month ago, however swapping cars next week so ill look into it then, no point disturbing it at the moment

Youtube has also killed the quality abit, is good quality playing direct from my SD card
