How are people finding Dash-cams on their insurance?

I called Admiral on Saturday to change cars over, as I was on the phone I thought I would see if my Dash-cam made the insurance any cheaper.

I was put on hold while he checked, and he came back to say that a dash cam is classed as a modification and the premium would go up as a result.

I was staggered and assumed a mistake, asked him to check again and he came back to confirm the same, I explained that it was only plugged into the cigarette lighter and stuck on the windscreen, not hard wired in and compared it to a sat nav, and asked if using a sat nav would also increase my insurance. Amazingly he checked and said that yes, a sat nav would also be classed as a modification and would increase my insurance too.

I gave up at this point and ended the call, I'm still assuming he was wrong and had the wrong end of the stick, anyone had the same?
Bloody hell, if that's the case I bet there are an awful lot of people running around effectively uninsured...

I temporarily mounted the Mobius in the car today prior to the intended hardwire install in the next week or two. More than happy with the video quality etc but the big issue I've got is interference with DAB radio (built-in to my Audi A4). I've gone from almost 100% DAB signal on my 20 mile journey to work, down to about 10% reception, only getting it in the centre of two towns I pass through. I tried it without the power source just running on battery and it was no better, so the interference is definitely originating from the camera itself rather than the lead / charger.

A Google on the topic flags up a few other Mobius owners with the same issue, one chap has two Mobius's front and back but only one interferred which suggests some inconsistent shielding in the components so I'm wondering if its worth getting it swapped out as faulty or whether they're similar so should just try and shield it somehow?

I still smile when people call it "footage". smile Even the police do it when asking for help/witnesses to an incident.

Does anyone on here remember real "footage" from a cine-camera etc? There was a time when you could hold the reel tape up to the light and view each frame...

I've installed the Mini 0806 now. I have a hard wire kit coming just to make the installation even neater.

I have to say I'm quite pleased with the quality of 'footage' for the price........though I've not really recorded anything interesting enough to upload yet.

What are people's thoughts on having the GPS/MPH stamped onto the video? It seems like it could be useful but could also be self incriminating. It is optional with this camera so I'm unsure what setting to use.

Yes Its the one with the GPS cant remember the model number. Like you wanted the back up of a shop plus discounts etc.

I'm uncertain about the GPS. It could be useful to have the speed and location, but at the same time it could be self incriminating should one be making good progress.
Yes its good. Techmoan shows video of it. I like the GPS for the moving maps etc. Ive turned off the inprint of the speed over a set mph.

Another "which dash cam" post sorry! Not wanting to read all of these pages but my wife would like a dash cam for her Boxster.

Criteria are smaller the better (very important to her, she doesn't want some ugly box fastened to her windscreen) 1080p and be able to hard wire the kit in (she will forget to plug it in and out of course!).

GPS etc would be nice but not essential, as would wifi viewing but again not essential.

I'd like if possible to be under £100 but may stretch for a really good one that fit the criteria.

I've looked but there seems to be hundreds out there and would prefer a recommend if possible. Thanks in advance.

Very simple - look at Techmoan - cameras I recommend - based on price, with or without a screen etc

Not sure whether this has already been mentioned but Transcend Drive Pro 220 now reduced to £99.99 at Argos with additional £10 voucher if spending £100+.

Just ordered one, apologies if old news.

^This. Techmoan youtube and website helped me make my mind up. I got the mini 0806 with GPS and filter lense thing and bought a separate hard wire kit & 32gb SD car all for about £110 delivered next day from Amazon. It is very discreet and easy to install.

I think the £100 area is a good amount to spend, unless you are a real tech geek and want fancy kit, front and back cameras, etc.

Quite like the look of that Transcend DrivePro 200, reasonable price and good review on Technomoan.

I'd need to hard-wire it in though, got no issues fishing cables down the A-pillar and along the roof lining but how best to connect it to the fusebox?

Piggback fuse is easiest, if there are no spare slots. Just check the current ratings carefully.

It isnt always the size of the camera thats the issue, its the size of the mount. Take a look at the E-Prance range (Mini 0801,0805,0806 etc) - the mount is the size of a 2p but is perm affixed to the screen. The cam itself then slots into it. The 12v cable goes to the mount. Probably about the most discreet you can get.

A question for dashcam users please.

Do you leave them in place all the time (affixed to the windscreen) or do you remove after each journey, and if so where do you store it, e.g. inside the car or elsewhere.

I have just purchased my first one (Drivepro 220) and I am unsure of what to do.

I leave my 801/805 in as it's hardly noticeable, the transcend one I have I'm still undecided as it has a silver ring round it and is a bit more obvious.

I think I might colour it in black.

I've left my DrivePro200 and replacement 220 stuck to the windscreen for over 2 and a half years with no problems

I leave the Mobius in as it looks like it is part of the car.

If you do remove an 801, 803, 805 from the screen between journeys, place it in a small coin bag or similar. The lens is easily scratched.

I guess any amateur attempt at polishing the lens will make matters worse? Anyone tried it?

One imagines the scumbags can't be sure there isn't another camera somewhere in the car making a full HD recording of their break-in.
