Sounds like a few people have had bad experiences with observers/advisors from the IAM. I was lucky when I joined as I got a good one.
It is worth sticking at it though as it does make you a better driver.

can i add to my earlier post the following -
i did for a while often travel in a car with a woman who'd just passed her IAM (within a month or so) yes her driving had got better, more gaps & so forth BUT she still couldnt drive. no real idea of the size of her car or reading roadsigns to get in the right lane in time for a junction, which to me is just as important. its no got not tailgating if you've got to cut people up to get the lane you need is it?

Hooli,

"however i will do a bikesafe or maybe the other course suggested on here somewhere next year"...

Go for it...I spent 8 hours with two Police Bikesafe men at an open day...talked the same language as IAM punters like me.

Keep in mind that IAM Observers are like plumbers or dentists - some better than others...but all volunteers...sorry yours did not impress you, but don't let it put you off?

BOF.

If this is true then the person in question shoudln'r have passed her test. Understanding roadsigns is a prerequisite of the standard test.
Not getting in the correct lane until the last minute is at best a complete lack of planning and at worst driving with undue care and attention. (neither of which are traits of someone who passed the IAM test)

Are you sure this woman had passed? Could she have been bending the truth slightly?

she passed i know that for a fact. shes fine if shes in an area she knows so doesnt need the signs, her lack of navigation means she needs a map to find the oven in a strange kitchen though!
