After loving the 940 (now sold) and then buying a T5 V70 (still own), I decied to continue my new found love for all things Volvo and purchase this stripped out ex-plod-mobile for some fun..
It's supposedly running around 350 bhp and it feels like it!! Uprated injectors, intercooler, intake etc.Seems to boost quite low down in the rev range which is nice, as it has wastegate chatter to die for! Sounds awesome when burbling along, too.Has lots stripped out of it, including all the impact stuff behind the bumpers. They are effectively just shells being held on with cable ties.
Pulls like a NOS powered train in all gears!

Sure I've seen this on the forums, I think a bloke called Emlyn had it a while ago but it had all it's trim etc. back then.
350 is probably a bit ambitious though, obviously, it depends on the supporting mods but that sort of power would require a 19t or K24 turbo, custom i/c green injectors, custom map, 3" downpipe, forged rods... getting the T5 lump over 300bhp is an expensive hobby mate.
That said, they can be stripped out to 1300(ish) Kg and that makes them a lot of fun
Enjoy

Must admit, 350 bhp is just the 'more or less' figure it was sold with so I have no idea in reality.I just assumed it wasn't far off, as it seems for around £300, you can get your 240 bhp T5 close to 300 bhp without the need for any of the bits this has supposedly had.May have to dyno it one day to find out the truth!
Honestly not worried though, it's still the maddest thing I have ever owned.I even had a few pops out of it today
I'm off to collect a V70 T5-R at the weekend, the Volvo love is growing by the day

The 250bhp T5 is a very different engine from the older T5 and will realistically make 280-290 bhp with a good map. The later 2.4 T5 however, is a different animal altogether. It's basically a down-tuned R lump and a simple £300 remap will give it 320+ bhp BUT it has a big turbo, 3" downpipe, Hi flow injectors, VVT on both cams, bigger inlet piping, higher flowing exhaust manifold etc. so the supporting mods are already there.Honestly not worried though, it's still the maddest thing I have ever owned.I even had a few pops out of it today

Pop over to one of the Volvo forums and have a look around (if you haven't already) www.vpcuk.org and T5D5.org would be the places to visit if you're interested in tuning.
And, not wanting to sound like a volvo nerd but... they never made a V70 T5-R, that badge was dropped when they stopped making the 850.
It'll either be a T5 or an R Looking forward to reading about it tho

You are spot on regarding my new purchase. My mistake. It was advertised as '1998 VOLVO V70 R TURBO AWD AUTO BLACK 240bhp'.There is no 'R' on the back though, but the reg shows it up online as an R, so maybe it's fallen off lol.
Seems the auto got 240 bhp (same as my 1998 V70 T5) and the manual got 250 bhp.I got all excited when I first googled for some info, as it started mentioning higher BHP figures, brembo brakes etc etc, then I realised that wasn't for the phase 1 cars.Doh!
Cheers for the link, I will take a look

If I'm correct, the 98 model was a test bed for the 2003 R. It will have vented rear brakes, brembo calipers, a 2.4 block (B5244t6 I think)and the much sought after 18t turbocharger. Watch the AWD system as the angle gear and rear diff seem to be made of chocolate and parts are hard to come by.

Was just reading up on that! It seems even having odd tyre pressures can do damage, and if you have different tyres, you may aswell just set fire to the thing Watch the AWD system as the angle gear and rear diff seem to be made of chocolate and parts are hard to come by.
By all accounts, if you have problems and don't want to spend money, you can just drop the prop and leave her as a FWD.
I picked the car up anyway, it's not slow by any means, but I guess loses some oomph due to the AWD system and it certainly sounds and feels feels a bit more 'raw' compared to the V70 T5.It's covered 108k and I should have a ton of history coming for it when the owner is back in the country. Will get some pics up when it stops chucking it down!
