The Tamiya RC car thread

Very fond memories of Tamiya RC cars during the late 1980s. I lived near Harrogate and any opportunity possible I'd go to Beaties toy shop and gaze at the Tamiya cars for sale, watching endlessly the Tamiya advertising promotional videos that were on a permanent loop. All the while I was saving up my pocket money, birthday and Christmas money to buy my first one.
I had a Blackfoot and then a Nissan Kingcab.
The Kingcab I modified with better versions of everything that Modelsport at Otley sold.
All the kids my age in the street had one and with it being a cul-de-sac we would race them on a circuit around the end. Lunchboxes, Monster Beetles, Boomerangs, Midnight Pumpkins, Grasshoppers, Hornets. Quite a range.

My first proper RC when i was young was a Kyosho Sierra RS500 (Texaco), later i has a Tamiya Astute buggy, and the Nissan R390c all around 1991-3. all long since died/sold.
More recently i brought a second hand TT01, originally the Mercedes CLK DTM kit, but when i got it it had a Skyline GTR R34 bodyshell. i rebuilt this as a replica of my real life VW Scirocco using the Scirocco GT24 shell modified with spoilers removed.
Not been off the shelf for a couple of years and the real life Scirocco has now gone, no one seems to do a 1/10th BMW 3 series touring shell

keep thinking of building a tamiya 911 rsr but realistically i'll never use it.

The building and painting part is the fun bit though. The good thing is that once it's built, it doesn't take up any more room. keep thinking of building a tamiya 911 rsr but realistically i'll never use it.

Good places in the UK include Jadlam (Russy is on PH), Modelsport or Fusion Hobbies, all of which can supply you with everything you need.Great thread and I’m fairly sure one like it has surfaced many years ago to, you can certainly tell how old posters are by their buying of RC cars, 80’s or 90’s very much so.
My history is I started with a used Willy’s Wheeler, then I had a new Hotshot 2, new Midnight Pumpkin and finally a new Porsche 959, then a used Wild Willy and Blackfoot which were both non runners, only needed a few parts which back in the late 80’s wasn’t a problem getting mail order or from your local model shop.
All sold on except the 959, still boxed with radio gear and a few spares in the loft.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, back in the late 80’s I should’ve bought a couple of extra body sets and wheels/ tyres for a few quid, maybe 2 weeks paper round money.
But there you go, battered body but it is locked away in its box and won’t be run anytime soon.
