Engine & Guns fitted at last! Those Master Model gun barrels are works of art. Few bits to tidy up in there, but 90% finished:

And the prop finally assembled. Added a few scratches to the blades with a silver pencil:

Next job, fit rudder & linkages, cannon muzzles, ailerons, flaps and slats to the wings and wait for some decals. Then it's matt coat, bit more weathering (exhaust and gun smoke and a few scrathes), u/c fitted. scratchbuilt nav. lights fitted, scratchbuilt aerial and, I can hardly beleive it, but I think that's about it!

Looking fantastic, can't wait to see the painting process.

With regards to paint chips, use citadel metallics like mithril silver, and a fine detail brush - dead easy .

Skii: If you're reading this, I picked up some Citadel Mithril Silver today: if you're chipping panel lines, do you mask one side and dab paint along the edge, or do you just do the whoe thing freehand? Cheers.

It's taken me four months to build a 1/72 Stuka - and it's not quite finished yet.

During WW2 they were building three or four REAL ones a day.

There are some people on B.M. who build complete models to a higher standard than this in less than a week. HonzaK is one of them. I can't figure out whether they simply don't need sleep, or they don't have a job a family or..whatever. There is no way I could build a detailed model in a week no matter what the circumstances were!

A quick credit for RedFirecracker who has produced some superb custom decals for me. They are the white aircraft "Wk.No." and "kill" markings on the fin:

Sent the order a couple of days ago, they arrived today, no fuss, no big deal, just great quality decals exactly as ordered. Very thin backing film too (much better than the stuff I sometimes use).

Thanks again RedFirecracker!

TBH I'd say for any colour custom made decals: the film seems much thinner than the commonly available stuff from Hannants.

Yeah, apparently he did make it, with 8 kills. I don't understand only two 'kills' being shown. Maybe the rest were obscured when the rudder was painted, or else two was the tally for that particular aircraft? His claims are:

14/05/40 1 x M.406
21/05/40 1 x Curtis
04/06/40 1 x Potez
07/06/40 1 x M 406
13/08/40 1 x Hurricane
01/09/40 1 x Hurricane
05/09/40 1 x Spitfire
06/09/40 1 x Spitfire

The last Spitfire was shot down presmably during his final sortie, before being shot down himself on that same day.

Try as I might, I can't find anything further about the pilot, Unteroffizier Hans-Georg Schulte. He survived, and was a POW. Apart from that...nothing. If the caption on this photo is to be belived, he is second from the (ETA *LEFT*), in the T-shirt. "White 5" can clearly be seen in the background, complete with red nose band (before the white i.d. was applied to the nose):

I bet his ground crew just hadn't had a chance to update the "kill" markings before he was shot down.

No idea, his 8 victories were over a period of about 4 months, which isn't a very long time. Average of about 1 kill per week. I wonder if he's still alive?

They've come out very well, nice to them being used in anger.

Did you use the single pass or double pass ones in the end?

Yep, they look good. I used the ones at the bottom of the strip, the darker ones (double pass?).

Cheers.

Yep, they'll be the double pass ones then, bit denser.

Yes: the gloss coat looks terrible, but you need it so that the dark wash just fills the engraved detail, without staining the (initially) matt painted surface. Decals adhere to a gloss surface better too.

The plan is to add some stencil decals here and there, then paint some paint chips/scuffs at random along the panel lines, then airbrush some exhaust/gun smoke, then add a bit of oil staining/grime/mud in a few places then an overall coat of XDFF extremely matt varnish to everything. It will look better then.

Almost perfect shade match as far as I can tell. Even though they are small, if they were pure white I think it would look wrong.

Cheers.

I used to do it completely differently, but that was decades ago, by weathering at the finale using a brush, slightly loaded with dirty turps and blowingit onto the area I wanted to 'age/stain/weather' things have moved on I guess
