Blimey ! Thats some chassis !

Feel your pain re the lights, 2 random Led’s of mine lit up blue biggrin must of posted the police option.

I’m going to chop all the cables about so i can hide the light box in the tank, and may drill crossmembers to run cables inside the chassis.

Plastic prepped with a scotchbrite for painting.

The 6x4 Scania and other 3 axle units are around 520mm long, mine is 733mm.
The reefer trailer is 983mm, so roughly 1720mm once you add an A frame for the dolly!
That’s going to be a good challenge to reverse biggrin

I’m just going to run my wires and cable tie them neatly for now, eventually I’ll get some of the metal cross members with holes in

The drive train is all done now, including a cranked steering rod to help get a tighter turning circle. You have to reverse the steering arms so they don’t hit the suspension, then the cranked rod is needed to clear the gearbox.

Unfortunately I’ve now got to continue spraying and lacquering!
I was enjoying the building as the spraying is so boring and time consuming.

I’ve just ordered a Ringfeder style tow hitch with servo controlled pin for remote unhitching. That will be interesting to fit as it’s going to be all custom with no manual to rely on.

Great thread, I went to a show a while back and there was a model truck show with guys driving their trucks around a layout. This motivated me to buy the earlier Tamiya Volvo FH tractor unit but it has just sat in the box.

Hopefully progress on yours will motivate me into starting mine!

That’s the one I built about 15 years ago, I loved it as much then as I do now. If anything, I’m enjoying this one more as I’m spraying it myself.
There are tons of mods and options now to customise them, get it started! biggrin

Looks great!

I bought the new G500 Cross-country back on release in November, hasn't come out of its' box yet frown

I need to find some motivation!

It’s nice to see some colour appear, progress is slow due to the priming, painting and lacquering being a bottle neck.

After lots of measurements and head scratching I managed to get the ring feder fitted, and it’s such a tight fit it’s perfect!
I had chop a bit of the rear crossmember for clearance, but apart from that it couldn’t have been a better location.
Originally I was going to leave the rear section off where a hiab crane would normally sit, but after cutting it down it became the perfect place to mount the extra cross member for the hitch.
By pure luck the bumper will fit underneath it too. I originally thought I might have to cut it down.
The servo for the hitch should mount on the original 2nd crossmember too, which should make it really nice and neat. Just need to get a servo lead extension.
The MFC has a switch which fits to the 5th wheel usually, as the engine sound is different when towing a trailer. I’m planning to fit it so the servo horn will operate it instead.
If I use the 5th channel which is an on/off switch on the radio, I can just keep it open so the MFC knows if a trailer is attached.

I’ll sort some close ups of detail in the morning smile
In the meantime, here’s a shot with coke can for scale.
The roof needs the blue finishing yet as it’s a little lighter than the cab.
The cab colours look a bit odd without the stripes, they will be added soon!
Next step is fitting the MFC and wiring everything up

Ok, some more pics.
I’m current trying to sort out the wiring, part of which is working out how the servo will be mounted for the hitch. I think I’ve worked it out now, I’ll have a bit more time tomorrow to get it mounted and tested.

I decided to add a red reflective stripe on the rear bumper, the same as our trucks have at work. I made a small cover for the back of the last crossmember above the hitch so it looks tidier.
The two rough looking bits sticking out the back will be removed or hidden, as that is mainly to show me where to mount the main body to.
If the coloured wires remain visible I’ll probably just go over them with Paint pen in black. I originally thought to put some black heat shrink tube on them but it would be a nightmare to fit.

Just a close up of the gearbox and some wiring, there is tons to try to fit and hide!

Side shot showing the orange marker lights, more wiring!

Finally, an over view of the underneath, it’s a lot more complex than it first looks.
Still need to mount the receiver, that is dependent on where the hitch servo goes so the cable reaches. I’ve got an extension if needed.

Forgot one, the MFC mounts in the back of the cab.
On the older trucks you were meant to remove the interior to fit the MFC, speaker and vibration unit in, but on the new ones they’ve changed the design so it all fits together

Its quite a pain, and a long awaited improvement by Tamiya, so far only fitted to the timber truck. Looks like they have also added some cable routing holes in the cab floor as well.

Got to hide the rats nest of MFC wiring in my tipper - which was released just a year before the timber truck, pics taken while testing it all worked.
