The Tamiya RC car thread
Discussion
Finally got around to starting my BBX build. Not done much yet, just the gearbox and motor but I’m already impressed at the quality.
It’s very different to my carbon fibre egress but also much better quality than any of the older Tamiya buggies I’ve built in the past.
First 2wd buggy I've built since my hornet in the 80’s!

any love for the GrassHopper ??
i bought a re release a cpl of years ago to build with my son - along with 4 nimh batts. Sadly after a few sessions in the road, he grew bored and it didn't make it back out of the garage.
He's now moved on ... and I rediscovered it whilst on a clear out. The batts had a little charge and i spent a fun 20 mins or so annoying the neighbours
i''ve got a Vector NX85 charger, but honestly not sure i remember what the charge rate needs to be for batts. i have 4X 1800Nimh and 2x 2100nimh ?

Yes- A grasshopper was my first rc car. I bought my son the re-release a number of years ago and he’s just spent the day racing the grasshopper and his dark impact around the garden after them gathering dust for a few years.
Wrt charging just charge at the rate equal to the battery spec- 1800mah- 1.8A, 2200mah -2.2A
I’ve done this with 7 flat nimh of 3000 to 3700 capacity and they’re “come back to life” and are fine.
I’ve got lipo on other models but even the NiMH are so much better than the 1200-1700 Nicads we used to use!

Talking of first RC cars, mine was the Tamiya Holiday Buggy, first released in 1980. This was kit number 58023 so very early in terms of off-road capable RC vehicles. It was in production until 1984 when the Grasshopper was first introduced.
I recently got my Holiday Buggy down from the loft and thought it was about time to dust it off and start a restoration project. I found the original 40 year old Tamiya 6V Ni-Cd battery and Acoms slow charger and plugged it in to see if it would still charge. Check out what happened along with a close-up look at the buggy and its period Acoms electronics in the video link below:

So this is my first Tamiya build. I have a TT02 but I bought that used so it doesn't count ha.
I screwed up cutting up the front of the shell but I think it looks fine still.
Went for a Tamiya purple though it does look quite blue.
Really enjoyed the build, though bits were more fiddly than I thought, probably as this is my first attempt.
It's running a 13.5T brushless, with the slipper clutch due to arrive tomorrow so I'll fit that.

Nice, mine is lacking a body but is otherwise finished too. Just need to find some time to spray. I’ve gone for PS-30 which is a lighter blue than they suggest. I screwed up cutting up the front of the shell but I think it looks fine still.

Running a 10.5 ish motor with the stock pinion so it’s a bit torquey. Might chuck a 23T pinion on to see what happens. No slipper clutch as yet as they keep being sold out at my favourite suppliers.

Oh my!I would be tempted to leave that untouched and just get it out from time to time to marvel at it.

New in box fetch a high price but it’s a jewel to own for sure!

Yeah, I’m in two minds. There’s not very many unbuilt. A few built and never used.
I might buy a ‘rough’ one to tinker with and use.
Don’t build it, mine is up in the loft and the arms have gone very brittle, I replaced one 15 or so years ago when spares were easier to get and a lot cheaper than now, now it’s back in its box. It was well used back in 1988. I might buy a ‘rough’ one to tinker with and use.
A collector passed away last year in America and over 500 kits unbuilt in boxes were auctioned off, he had a few 959’s.

got this to think about building.
Also found my tnx 5.2r nitro to repair, although parts seem to be hard to get hold of. Looks like just the enigne starter casing is needed.
