I set up nearly everything I have got last night, my lad loved it but it needs some cleaning on the connections, the same few corners would always cause the cars to stop and you could see some arching in the connection, I need some more tight corners so I can create an infield section

Some highlights were charger corner and ironing board bridge

And scooter curve and washing basket corner

...
Awesome.

I have realized I need more track! Will buy some later today biggrin

Do you guys ever use the cars or just use for decoration?
I've the 60th e type, an E30, Lotus Cortina Gt40 etc but they all get used and abused

50/50. Some are too nice and detailed to crash (rally classic minis) but others I use loads (group b rally cars).

Great fun to run an old Rover SD1 police car (I've got two) on the original tyres. They're so time-hardened that there's very little grip at all, so the cars slide around all over the place. I used to play police chases with my boys, them using the F-40 and Diablo from an old set that I bought at a boot sale and refurbished with fresh tyres, etc, me trying to hang on with one of the SD1s. It was a great handicap for me, allowing the boys to get a few wins in the bag while they got used to controlling the cars without getting frustrated or feeling that I'd "let them win".

Sadly, after a house move this year, the cars and all my track are still packed in their removal boxes out in the garage, and the pace the DIY stuff is progressing at suggests that boarding the loft and getting power up there won't happen until after next summer, so I'm out of the loop on running Scalextric cars still...

I have used most of mine, the only exceptions being a couple of rare original "mint in box" F1 cars that arrived after the track was last used, and the Goodwood GT40 set that I pre-ordered and was "too nice" to run. So I bought an additional pair of single GT40s, and judging by the bits that have come off them when they were run, keeping the Goodwood set boxed was a good call. I used to display the Goodwood set, along with a few other boxed cars, in a cabinet, but now I no longer have the space to display them (smaller house after downsizing) so I guess I ought to either run them, now, or sell them for someone else to enjoy...

Bit of newbie advice needed please. I have just managed to get new guide blades for a few of my classic scalextric cars from the mid 90's and tested them on my sons LM24 set that Santa brought him. Unfortunately all 3 of my childhood memories slowly skid off and roll over like i'm a complete novice!

Is the magnet not strong enough, or that the tyres have lost all their grip in the last 25 years of storage?

Tyres should be easy enough to change, so I would try those first. Our racing club doesn't allow magents in cars, and we don't have the problems you are describing, so I would only try changing those if the tyres fon't work out.

If you can’t wait for a new set of tyres then you could try an old trick of cola or hairspray on the tyres to give them some extra grip

After a trip to my local model shop I bought replacement tyres yesterday, slight improvement in grip but still embarrassingly slow compared to the modern cars.

If it's a 90's Scalextric it probably has a brown magnet? The neodymium ones Scalextric use now are far stronger.

I am quite a strong fan of no-magnet racing but without track borders to arrest the sliding, braking to help in the corner entry, and a decently set up chassis (hard to achieve with that hardware anyway) I can totally understand sticking with magnets. At least you have got modern tyres fitted!

Track will be us for modern cars unless it is Sport track.

Cars should run fine other than the usual checking of connections, new braids, a dab of 3 in 1 - only things that are very likely to have gone south is the tires that are likely to have perished.

Nice.

Some of these cars make good display pieces IMO.

Now we are in lockdown I decided to build the kids a semi-permanent layout on a bit of 8x4 (all I had available).

Kids loved it and played all day on it, but now I want to stick the track to the board permanently so we can put it down for school time.

In my box of bits I found some scalextric sport track fixing middle clips, but not sure they will be strong enough, so thinking I need the side fixing clips (scalextric c8232) - but can’t find them for sale anywhere online.

Any have any, or know where to get them? Or alternative way to stick the track down, without using glue as don’t want to ruin the track?

Cable clips? https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/BHSWA46.html

Use a pliers to cut them at the top of the "arch" and fix them in pairs at the sides of the track? I've not tried it yet, but toyed with that as a way to fix my track direct to a boarded loft floor. It may cause issues with cars running though - on bends they drift wide, and the clips might cause cars to flip where they otherwise might get around the corners. Just a thought, and a possible solution.

Now that we are in "lockdown" I'm regretting not prioritising sorting the loft floor because I have nowhere to put a track up...

Not a bad idea, thanks, might see if I can find some that fit into the track slots in the side after cutting the rest of the bend off. That way it might not interfere with the track. Alternatively could look to just do the straights!
