Assassins look ridiculous to my inexperienced eyes - I can see them being a must have in anything near a competitive game?

They're just so strong at what they do and cost about the same as a minor character, plus being able to tailor them to your opponent in tournament play just adds to it.

There are pros and cons. Until the update, you were losing 1CP from your other detachment total to run them, and they had no strats/traits.

Now, they're a dead cert I'd say. Especially when you can swap the 1CP you'd get for an assassin det in return for being able to pick whichever unit you want - in a tournament, that means you can always take the best one for your opponent. Shut down psychic? No probs. Got a powerful buffing character? Same deal.

I'm no serious competitive player - but they are really bloody cheap for what they do.

Plus, with Cypher as HQ choice - you can run them in a chaos list too...

yes

Although not against me.

It's because of the strat to slot an assassin in - doesn't require a detachment, merely an HQ that has the Imperium keyword... So the assassin keyword is moot and doesn't break battleforged.

Hello Cypher...

Costs 2CP total (-1 for taking Cypher on his own, 1 for the strat in matched play). Drop in the best suited one at the beginning of the game.

There absolutely are plague marines (who aren't necessarily all Death Guard, but plenty of DG got pissed off with the whining between Morty and Typhus and buggered off to go pillaging) in the Black Legion - and Abaddon will likely be a massive force multiplier for any Chaos Space Marine force... Much like Guilleman is for anything Imperial.

It's unfortunate Shadowspear comprises new factions (Daemonkin and Vanguard SM) - as then we're looking at yet another detachment, yet another book, and a pain in the arris remembering all the rules (and importantly, the exclusions...).

The exact opposite of GW's stated intent with 8th. Quelle surprise!

Models look stunning though. I'm waiting for the proper kits to be released, as they'll make great bitz supplies for conversions for my Kill Team dudes.

Also, going to be really, really hard to resist plugging in a 750pt Battalion of Raven Guard vanguard marines - that is a vicious combination of traits and rules that mean many armies simply cannot hit them.

Oh, and then there's a pull for an assassin det too. Might actually start to see fewer Castellan on the competitive tabletop.
Interesting, I clearly haven't read as much as I thought about Shadowspear. I knew the new Vanguard SM guys were a separate faction, but hadn't realised the Demonkin were also.

That makes them more awkward to shoehorn into a DG army along with any Black Legion chaps as well, I guess.

The Vanguard guys could work very well with AD Mech, but I hadn't considered running them as Raven Guard. I might need more black paint!

Why wouldn't you take at least a couple in any list though?

Cullexus is brutal against any Psykers, Vindicare is brutal against elite armies and Eversor will churn through hordes, castles/bubbles and infantry all day long.

Unless you're running an all Knight army, I can see a use for at least two against any opponent?

No problems running a third detachment of any kind, maintaining the legion traits of all three...

They're not objective secured (which is becoming really important), and 170 pts of guard nets you 5CP...

They are looking really good now though with their strats, so I think they'll be a really common addition to imperial soup - especially culexus to protect knights or custodes from psychic mortal wounds or loss of invuln. Running three isn't an immense amount of points and you don't lose a CP for an auxiliary det.

Keeping 85pts in reserve to just pick whichever one best suits the situation would be an auto include for me.

Starting to get some of my (late) evenings back and am enjoying mixing up painting troops, characters, vehicles and scenery. This is tonight's work, Victrix for scale:

I really think I need to pick up that set. Looks awesome - I've seen some cool stuff done with water effects in the specimen tank...

Celtic and Havoc - parcels done, my better half will be sending them out tomorrow /Tuesday. Celtic, had no drukhari for swaps unfortunately (beloved daughter has claimed the couple of boxes I had!) - but I think I've put together a nice little package including a forgeworld character that'll give you a chance to do something a bit different with your other army...

If you're not happy - no drama! Just pop them back in the box (should be reusable with a bit of tape) with the containers /poxies and we'll sort out an alternative /cash once I get back.

Youngsyr Shadowspear order is confirmed, they should be contacting my other half direct. She'll get it split and sent over whilst I'm away. Any issues and I'll sort once I'm back on the 23rd when I get dosh sent over.

Cheers Sway, appreciate you sorting it.

There are some nice pieces in that objective set - the crashed escape pod and exterminatus bomb look great too.

I did consider water effect plus maybe an LED or two. Would look to have a glowing green liquid filled tank, maybe with a falshing red light on it. The magazine subscription includes the set at some point. Might do my second tank empty, with broken glass and red warning screens. cool

If I can suggest an idea. If you are mounting this on a base, you could fill the chamber with smoke from a vaporizer and light it with small leds smile

You might not be able to get one small enough to be hidden under the item itself, but if you could hide it in a plinth.

I can ask my vape shop what’s the smallest they can get if you want? I spend enough with him, he’ll do a special order.

Ah right, so it's essentially an e-cig in the base - how would you make it produce the smoke, don't you need to suck on an e-cig to generate it?

Would be interested to see options though!
