I have the Army Painter set and have found that the colours can come up as a bit bold at times compared to GW paints.

Also if you have an Amazon account, you can get Vallejo Model series paints for less than GW paints (£2.45 v £2.75), and I rate Vallejo higher than GW.
Agreed.

For paints I use either Vallejo or GW (mainly because I have historically built up a collection of GW paints before I realised there were better alternatives).

For washes, I find Army Painter better than GW.

For spray primers, Army Painter all the way.

There are usually pretty good deals on Army Painter and Vallejo on eBay too - you can select your own box of paints in bottles of 3, 4, 5 etc, so you can avoid the problem of buying a set with paints you won't ever use.

GW are pretty good paints, but they are expensive and the bottles are naff.

Vallejo air paints are incredible... Especially the metallics.

Their fantasy range is also superb for bold, bright and vibrant tones.

Only GW paints I use now, even though I have dozens, are washes and the technical paints...

Also to add, Vallejo are 17ml v GW which I think are 12ml.

Just started prepping a big gribbly monster for a client.

Quite a handful of sharp legs and big pointy teeth.
That looks like one of the large Tryanids smile I'd love to see that when its finished if possible?

Last night and tonight's work...

Think I actually spent longer on the base than the model!

Update:

Reaver is en route, Warhound has been rebased to something much more suitable!

Different angle showing the Skitarii

Dark Mechanicum are coming along very slowly too. List has changed significantly which means i've now got zero use for the Thanatar Calix currently! Doesn't help that on paper they look great but on the table they're significantly poo.

Has anyone got any ideas on which terrain kit would have the corner of a building, that’s about 5 inches tall in it? Or an alternative source for one?

I want to base the Heldrake around it instead of the clear plastic stand off stand.

Yeah, it's no worries - I've loads of the sector Imperialis stuff. A single bit of ruin won't make a dent. If it makes you feel any better, feel free to order one of these (£3.50) to my address - I was just about to buy some https://www.geekgaming.co.uk/shop/quick-and-easy-r... you don't have to though!

5" tall, what size length/width? Assume you want it to fit on the regular flying base?

Thank you Sway smile

I think it’s a standard oval, I’ll check the size tonight.

I read this thread a lot, not sure I've ever posted as I'm not into Warhammer, but I enjoy seeing the skill of all you guys modelling.

Anyway, not sure if you're aware (you probably are), but on facebook there's a marketplace, and there's a lot of Warhammer stuff that finds it's way on there. To me in the main it looks reasonable priced. Just thought I'd share in case any of you aren't aware of this as a source for stuff.

Thanks for the advice chaps. I have a smallish and rather boring collection of acrylics from modelling I have done in the past (not to mention the usual modelling tools - airbrush, knives, flash removal tool, sanders etc) plus ones from the first 2 editions of Conquest. Although I found the first 6 Conquest figures really interesting, I'm not really motivated enough by them to want to buy dozens more of similar models, and after a few years of being a full time carer, my income isn't really big enough to drop 8 quid a week on something like this. Like I say, I have no interest in actually gaming with them, it is very much the modelling and painting that interests me. Something I can pick up and put down when I have free time.

So far I have been priming them with grey MIG airbrush primer, and then applying a couple of thin coats of an appropriate base colour. In the case of Orks, probably the Death Guard Green that came with Conquest. Talking of which, in addition to the Citadel paints, I have half a dozen or so Vallejo paints, so will probably be going with that range. But... the temptation of being able to walk into a real shop and compare colours is so tempting and I find it is so difficult working out what paints you need without seeing them. 12ml does seem rather mean though, and I dislike the container design as much as the rest of you, so I'm looking at getting some dropper bottles from Ebay similar to the Vallejo ones, decanting in the Citadel paint and popping in a stainless steel ball bearing.

I definitely want to have a go at chipping and rusting, especially on the Ork Deff Dread. I think the dirty and rusty look suits Orks much more than it does Space Marines.

On reflection, I think I should probably wait until my skills are a bit more polished before I tackle something like the big Tyranids! Maybe it would be better to pick up something like Mollog's Mob.

Its getting there, and almost all done!

I have a couple of defects to rectify and the neck to repaint, as I don't like the colour, should have gone with a darker purple. I've also got to reset angle the wings sit at. I magetized it whilst it was still in bits, and I got the set angle wrong, and didn’t take the fixed rear wings into account. Crossing fingers that greenstuff and new holes can correct it

Going to take a break from this one now, as I've lost the mojo for it (found I made more mistakes towards the end, so from now, I've decided to have serveral small models and a couple of big ones on the go at various stages of completion, so I can roll between them). A colour change should allow a brain unblock.

Looking superb chap.

Reminds me of a post by a commission painter and golden daemon winner - 50 Little circles pointing out all the 'mistakes' he could see, that no one else noticed!
