OK, forget Calgar - this is getting ridiculous! Mortarion's wings work in progress by Richard Gray below.

Looks like he finally finished and entered it into Golden Demon:

It's just stunning!

I’ve somewhat lost my mojo with plastic kits of late.
I was passing by a games Workshop store today and popped in to ask about the new paints (not out until June apparently)
Anyway I had a chat with the manager and a bit of a look around and ended up buying this.

Hugely expensive at £37 for a couple of sprues and a base, but the quality looks top notch.
I’m not sure how long it will take, fingers crossed I don’t cock it up.

I managed to do a bit of building last night.

Not too much clean up is required, just some small moulding seams.

I’ve decided to paint it in manageable sub assemblies to make it a bit easier.

I just bought a Warsmith as I bought the Shadowspear box for the marines but thought I may as well build a small chaos force now I've got them. Surprised to see a metal model, I'd forgotten how irritating to build they were, really made me appreciate how good the new plastic kits are.

Big Bobby G is a bloody superb model. Shame Matt Ward ruined the Ultramarines for me forever.

If I may offer some advice - I'd think this is a perfect model to use the new Contrast paint.

Spray with Retributor Armour and wash, then infill the armour plating with the new primer and then the Ultramarines contrast paint.

Should be a lot easier (infilling the blue is easier regardless) and judging by the examples shown by GW and from Warhammer Fest, will look absolutely stunning.

I was planning to paint it in the same way as I paint resin figures. I’m going to use the closest colours I have (the ultra marine blue is close enough to French blue) I don’t think I’m going to go mad with lots of edge highlights though.

The contrast paints aren’t out for a while otherwise I may have been tempted to give them a go.

I’ll post pictures of my progress...

I started painting the face last night.
It looks terrible in the picture, but in reality it’s not too bad. I’m really not used to anything this small...

Thanks

The shadows are a real balancing act. Too much (like mine) and it looks rubbish up close. Too little and it looks plain at normal distance.

I took the view that this is the only time it would be so magnified and went with heavy shadows.

I really struggle with the modern paint range too - I used to have a technique and palette down really well, but they don't sell those specific colours anymore and everything I've tried since doesn't look quite right. frown

Some watered down Kislev Flesh on the nose and cheekbones will bring that up another level!

I’m off on holiday for a week, so there won’t be any updates until I get back.

I thought I’d share my current progress.

I can see why these take a lot of time to paint.

Thanks..

It’s a long way from finished, but so far so good.

Overall it’s been an enjoyable build and a real test compared to some of the larger figures I have been doing.

I’m not feeling the urge to do loads more yet, that might change. But for now it’s a one off.

At least I’m qualified to post on this thread now.

Inspired by these metal guard females I’ve ordered some bits from anvil industries to make a female only guard kill team, looking forward to doing some kitbashing with the scions and cadians, I’ll post some updates of the WIP.
