Glad this thread is back now the new edition is out. I sold all my warhammer after uni to get some cash together but I've started buying more again. Want to start a new 40k army but I'm loving the new warhammer quest too much.
Wish I had more people to play with.

BV - the new rules are a lot simpler. The core rules are available as a free download from GW website.

This is my Iron warriors legion, some models are over 20 years old from when I first started collecting. Stop collecting them but got back into it after reading some of the black library books.

Slowly repairing/kit bashing/re-painting this army, is a mish mash of all sorts collected over the years.

I must encourage my bro to get his Orks and Necrons out and we will try the new rules with my daughter and nephew.

My bro has also promised to GM a mahoosive D and D sesh or maybe a Traveller adventure. My daughter and nephew can provide the brains and magic. I'll come along as the dumb muscle character.

Thats really good. I struggle with the layering, can't keep it neat/fine enough. Any tips?

I've just started getting back into it having been a 2nd ed into 3rd player. Bought the bloomin 7th ed rules set with an intention to play 30k just before I clocked 8th was coming, very annoying. Now can't work out whether to drop 30k and just pursue 8th or try to do both (but the cost!).

Still haven't actually played, just building and painting models from the two Horus Heresy boxed games for now. Need to find a good club nearby.

This thread has just popped up again in "my stuff" great painting and bits and pieces, never been able to do any of this well at all, but hats of too you gents, it all look very cool.

However, being sympathetic to the Imperial Guard and Space Marines I have to say it's a thread full of Heresy too.

Edit: Hershey's Chocolate Heresy, we could make millions!

What? A thread full of a mis-spelled American chocolate snack?

A most bizarre result using the old rules. A group of Tau Pathfinders are hiding in a wood, painting targets for a couple of Hammerhead tanks that are hull down slightly to the rear of the Pathfinder position. A lone Blood Angels APC makes it through the Hammerheads' super accurate long range railgun fire (the other APCs are knocked out on the way in), and the Marines de-bus and charge up the hill into the woods. In real life, the Pathfinders would melt away and head for the hills, but this being 40K they have a stand up fight on the edge of the woods. Much dice rolling ensues. The Pathfinders - light infantry in a shooty and non bashy army, are now being assaulted by heavily armoured close combat specialists. The Pathfinders win the melee. Rules = rubbish.

More realistically, over on the other flank a patrol of Marine Biker Scouts get enfiladed by Tau Fire Warriors hiding behind a wall and are all shot off their bikes willy nilly. But why the Hell haven't the Marines ordered in some close air support to kill those Hammerheads? Silly game is silly.

Best advice is decen5 tools. A good quality brush that holds a point is a must in my opinion. A brand like Winsor & Newton do a set called Series 7. Watercolour edition NOT the miniature painting versions as they are too short and don't have a big enough well (thick part of the brush)

They are dear but they are the best and if you look after them last a long time.

WRT layering it's a case of keeping the paint thin enough to not clump or leave brush strikes BUT not so thin as to flood onto the model.

Another good tip is to attach the model to so.ethibg lik3 a big cork or old paint pot and hold your painting hand steady on the hand you're holding the model with to stop she.

Another tip is to hold the brush closer to the ferulle (metal band) so you have tighter control

Thanks for that, will give it a go. When putting in my first order when getting back into it I just bought a load of GW brushes as I wasn't sure how keen I was going to remain and hadn't done research about better brushes.

GW brushes will be fine to be getting on with. Have a look on you tube for GW painting videos with Duncan. They are very good for intro to a decent standard.

Duncan is a legend, although I've found his pre warhammer TV stuff to be more interesting as it doesn't always follow the GW script!

However, there's been a great series on the new starter set - with 'tabletop' guides that are really very simple, as well as a more advanced video on the same models showing edge highlights and blending techniques.

As always though, I'm finding I watch the 'tabletop' vid and think 'that looks easy', yet it's strangely more difficult when I attempt it!

hehe

Lo and behold - I merely hinted at Duncan's old conversion vids before being employed by the IP protectorate in Nottingham, only for them to post up the '200th daily video'...

Where they gave Duncan the choice of topic, and he does a kitbash tutorial!

Comments seem overwhelmingly positive, so hopefully they will loosen up a tad and let him do more (but only using GW products, natch).

Ok I'm giving this a go. I used to paint space marines as a lad and since watching the Warhammer TV tutorials I'm keen to have another bash at this.

So I've ordered a couple of sprues of Space Marine bits and I'm going to have a go at a small 5 man squad of Salamanders for starters.

Just need to get the paints now, I'll probably get the base colours I need for starters and take it slow, this stuff isn't cheap !

For anyone interested, our local Boyes was stocking a very meager but quite cheap array of W40k and some Lord of the Rings type miniatures, i'm guessing they might stock similar across their stores.

Slightly off topic, dug out a shed load of my lead figures from the the late 80's mainly Bloodbowl and Warhammer stuff, does it have any value?

It can do if they are rare items. Get up on ebay and have a look. There are lots of collectors who want complete sets of original minis.
