The best for me was the first one I got - in 1978, the 854 Go-kart. Played with that set for days on end; sometimes less is more.
At that time it wasn’t Lego “Technic”, but a Lego “Technical set”.
Still got it, assembled in my office.
I had that one too, think it was my first one. I do still have it in the sence that all the bits are now mixed in with the massive tub of general Lego my son plays with. I could probably rebuild it.At that time it wasn’t Lego “Technic”, but a Lego “Technical set”.

There was not a lot of Technic involved in that if I recall.
Helicopter 852 was the first true Technical set for me. The main structure was beams and pins and it had functions front to rear.

It had loads of Technical features (for the day), including a 2x2 brick as a working piston... Released two years later than your helicopter though. Helicopter 852 was the first true Technical set for me. The main structure was beams and pins and it had functions front to rear.

I'd tried moving the support arm more to the left but it wasn't very stable, that extra bit to rest the tyre on looks like a great ideaSydneyBridge said:
Will always be 8860, car chassis for me
Pretty sure that was the last one I made until the Ducati at the weekend. My first was was the 851 tractor, which I loved
Interesting how they've evolved over the years, the modern ones seem to be all left together with pins/axles without the click together blocks that I always remember

I've found the UniMog for £120. Made up once and dismantled but the pieces bagged by size. Not sure how much of a ball ache this will make it.
The cabin and the flat bed should stand out a mile, there's a ton of push fittings, so again they would be easy to segregate. Hoses all have a scale to measure them against. Shouldn't be so bad. I really enjoyed it. zasker said:

Me too. Introduction, I believe, of a lot of now-standard features. And just awesome. moanthebairns said:

This for me, but probably only because I couldn’t get 8860.
My first Technic set, seemed impossibly complex at the time. Now seems like a Duplo set
Still got mine...My first Technic set, seemed impossibly complex at the time. Now seems like a Duplo set
Bought this one from Legoland, Denmark in 1989...
This was my first Technic kit, the pieces are still in a box in the shed...
I've still got the fuselage for the seaplane 8855 built up but I've misplaced the wings somewhere. Where ever they are they are still in one piece as there are several shaped pieces which definitely aren't in my box of bits.

What is the greatest Technic set of all time? My friend had a JCB Back Hoe with everything pneumatic back in the late 80s which seemed totally awesome.
Of the ones I've built, the big Claas Xerion was my favourite.

The original car sets were all chassis only for a number of years. They then got a frame and eventually the full body that covers the fun stuff. In that respect I don’t enjoy them as much once they pass the chassis. I also think that they are getting a little over complex with a massive gear box that takes ages to figure out.
I’d like to se move yellow stuff. The Liebherr LR 13000 will be interesting. I am hoping for some good features and not just size and a fancy control module.

My son got the Defender for Christmas and we just started it (he doesn’t like Technic so I have to help).
I’m not enjoying it - just a mass of gears so far with no obvious point. It also doesn’t have enough build sections - only 4 which means a huge amount of bits out on the table at the start of a section.
Hopefully the finished model is worth the effort.
Well, it is finished. Absolute chore and not an enjoyable build.I’m not enjoying it - just a mass of gears so far with no obvious point. It also doesn’t have enough build sections - only 4 which means a huge amount of bits out on the table at the start of a section.

And the gearbox doesn’t seem to work, not that you can use it anyway because the levers are hidden away inside. Really poor design from Lego that makes the main functions essentially useless.
Still, it looks reasonably good sitting on a shelf.

found it one of the better Tec models I have built ..there is an issue with 2 drive shafts inc myself so all I did was disconnect a rear wheel coupling and the model works fine ,as it sits on a shelf not a problem. We do have a bug still, when pushing it along the left front wheel seems to lock up. very odd
