009 is very interesting if you like scenary.
I have seen several layouts based on small prototypes in 4 foot by 2 foot boards.
I particularly like the slate quarries
The advantage with 009 (or disadvantage depending on your outlook) is that you can scratch build a lot of the locos using n-guage running gear.

Have a look at those for inspiration.
Id love to build one but I lack the time, the skills and the patience to learn!
I'm starting a 009 layout, but all I've done so far is buy the loco, two wagons, and a load of 009 peco flexi track. I need to come up with a design soon I have seen several layouts based on small prototypes in 4 foot by 2 foot boards.

I'm in a similar boat. Two locos (completely and utterly mis-matched!) six wagons, two guards vans and nothing else. I still have the layout my Dad and I made fully two decades ago, but that's up north and probably needs major work.
Planning to buy some track and sketch out a layout once I've finished some DIY projects. May get some track designer software to tinker with in the meanwhile..
