Due to lack of space these days it's difficult to use my OO-scale. so I was thinking about getting a simple Z-scale set to start with. but why are they so expensive?
Does anyone know of any specialist websites?

Most of the locomotives you can understand being expensive because of the amount of detail.
I'll have a look at N-scale too.

That is true.
Most hobbies are costly anyway.
--edit--
For now I could try and find a Graham Farish Junior Starter Set (when it's available) and expand it when possible.

The 009 idea sounds interesting. At the moment i'm trolling around ebay for affordable N-gauge.
With not alot of space I like doing small and simple dioramas.

Random silly question time...
I was sorting out my old track and found this one by Lima.
Is it some sort of re-railer?

I got my Ebay bargain today. £43 for an old (very old) Lima N-gauge set.
The engine needed a quick service and now it's great.
All I need to do now is plan a layout and spend lots of money.

That's a great start. a bit more simple than my many turnouts.
Wiring is alot easier when you understand the basics of it.

(If a mod could rename the thread title to Z & N it would be nice)

I'll be switching my points by hand.
I've half made a www.scalescenes.com Portal.
The other side of it will be an engine shed built into a hill that goes under a corner shelf.
Could be a Top Secret test facility.

At the moment I'm opting for small diesel because they are cheap.
The steam prices you can understand with all the detail they have.

Last week I stood in the middle of a field to get a photo of a steam engine on the mainline.

And I wrapped an old cork board I had lying around with A4 paper for now.
Need to square it up and paint it a matt black or something.

--edit--
Just put together a Peco 5 plank wagon (KNR-40).
It's so tiny laugh

With shelf...

I put an led in the front of my engine.
I've ordered some small reds so I can do the rear too.

I will be replace the simple white one for a twin/colour led so it can change from yellow to red.
Which will need a better wiring idea.
And I'm still trying to figure out how to get fiber optic behind the motor to light the rear. there's kinda no room around it.

Can't wait to see what you got in mind.

Is it my imagination or are N-scale cars a little bit too small?

I dug out my old N gauge rolling stock from the loft the other day, from when I used to have a layout in the loft, my father built for me when I was 3 or 4. I'm now 26. Its been boxed up for the last 12 years or so. This thread has fired up the urge to build a layout! N gauge is so damned expensive though and having a lust for steam locomotives doesn't help. What to do?!
I'm 26 too. Just take your time and save up a bit at a time. I keep trolling on ebay for cheap diesel shunters. hardly any engine is under £50.

That's great.
While reading through the new Model Rail mag I noticed that ehattons.com has some good prices on engines.
Like 'Tangmere'. if only I could afford it now. not many left. http://www.ehattons.com/26651/Graham_Farish_372_27...

If you can afford the engine you could probably afford the DCC chip to go in it :P
I really want an airbrush so I can repaint my diesel properly.

I'm still playing around with lights.
