New old stock Tamiya kit value
Discussion
Through work we have been asked to sell some Tamiya stuff. There is a sad story behind it which I will come to.
In short, we have 2 Tamiya blazing blazer kits(as well as some other stuff). Both of which are brand new. Boxes can ony be described as mint, none of the packaging has been opened and are believed to be complete. Without getting too involved it's quite hard to tell.
The story goes, An old couple bought them to us, they then explained how they came about them.
Their son, got his first job working in a model shop. He loved his models. All his wages were spent in the shop where he worked(I'm sure the shop loved that!) he was 16. He was then diagnosed with a brain tumour. He passed away aged 17. That was 28 years ago.
These models have been in his parents loft ever since he died. They haven't even looked at them since putting them Away!
Obviously for them, it is very difficult to get rid of it all. They have no idea of value and to be frank, neither do I. They may only be worth £10 they may also be worth hundreds, I don't know. Can any of you give me a rough guesstimate of what they may be worth?
Modern RC I am fine with as I raced 1/8th nitro buggies and flew planes but this older stuff seems a bit of a lottery.
They are a lovely old couple and I'd really like to do my best with them.
Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.

I really hope you don't mind but I have linked this thread to the Tamiya Club forum for their attention. You will probably receive a few enquiries - is there a better way for you to direct the interest this will generate?
Apologies if anyone feels that doing this will prevent them getting a bargain but this sorry tale is enough for me to want to get this information spread as far among the community as possible so this elderly couple get the best prices.
Also have a keen interest in the other items that may be for sale too?
That is no problem at all. Thanks for doing it!Apologies if anyone feels that doing this will prevent them getting a bargain but this sorry tale is enough for me to want to get this information spread as far among the community as possible so this elderly couple get the best prices.

As much as finding a bargain would be nice, I would really like to get the best price for the old couple. They truely were heart broken just getting them out of the car. It must have been very hard for them to get rid of it all.
Unfortunately our auction doesn't have a website. If you would like to pm me, I can pass on either my email or our phone number. I will do all I can to help anyone interested. I won't put them on here as I feel it may break the forum rules.
Thanks again everyone, it is very much appreciated.
If a mod reads this and are happy for me to do so then I will happily post details but until then if anybody would like to know when and where the sale is then PM me. It is only a couple of days away.
For the mods, these kits aren't mine(I wish they were) and I won't gain a penny from the sale. I am just trying to do my best for the couple.
What I will say though is there has been a lot of interest both from here and the Tamiya club. More than I could have ever imagined to be honest! So really, thank you so much for the assistance. I hope they go to a good home.

Apologies, I have been a busy boy!
I will try and answer a few questions.
We have been instructed to sell them by the owners. As far as they are concerned, they want it all gone. They have no idea of value and neither did I until this thread. I'm still gobsmacked by the way. When they entered the items I asked them to consider putting reserves on the kits at least, they declined and asked for us just to sell everything. I feel the sum they make is irrelevant to them. Albeit, they didn't know the value. Rest assured I most certainly won't let them sell too cheaply. I just wish I was on commission!
After finding out what I have(thanks to you guys) people have been spreading the word. I have had around 20 different people contact me regarding coming to the sale, all contact coming via here. I know of a couple of people coming from quite a distance.
Regarding what they make, our auction is a strange place with a lot of extremely knowledgeable people attending. We sell everything from boxes of utter crap to extremely valuable antiques. In most cases, things generally make close to what they are worth. I genuinely hope that is the case with these.
As I have stated previously, these are nothing to do with me and I won't make a penny from the sale so surely there can't be any harm in posting the details. If a mod has an issue with this then please delete this post and accept my apologies.
The auction starts at 6pm tomorrow night(30th). The cars are expected to be sold somewhere between 7-7.30pm.

Obviously the girls in the office won't know much about them but if there is anything specific you need or want to know then ask to speak to me and I will try and do what I can. Obviously I am no expert so likely won't be able to tell you much.
Regarding commission bids, yes we do accept them on the understanding you have viewed the item beforehand. That way IF anything is missing or not as expected then you only have yourselves to blame.
I am genuinely very grateful for the help you have given me, I honestly can't thank you enough. If any of you do attend then I will happily buy you a cup of tea/coffee. It's not very good but I am told it's the thought that counts!
I hope to see you there.

I am happy to tell you they have both been sold. Even better than I could have expected thanks to you guys!
We did have a couple of PHers attend.
One kit sold for £1350 plus the fee's to one of our regular buyers. As it turns out, this one had a little damage to the blister pack.
The other sold too but as I believe it was a fellow PHer bought it, I won't disclose how much for. If he would like to share that with you, then no doubt he will.
All the other RC stuff entered by them also sold extremely well. This included lots of Tamiya parts. I think the vendors will be very happy!
Again, I would just like to say a massive thankyou to all of you who have been in touch, Spread the word and given me advice. I am truly grateful! I will happily buy any of you guys a beer if our paths ever cross.

Thankyou.
I haven't spoken to the vendors personally(been busy having 2 auctions per week, tonight I broke my personal highest sale price at £11200+vat, you can always rely on a hilux!) but I kind of want to hand deliver their cheque myself!
Having a quick look through the figures today, from a boot full of "junk" they were half expecting to take to the tip, they will be recieveing a cheque for over £3200 with the fees deducted.
There was one other Tamiya model that made £70 or £80, I don't know what it was but it was 1/24 scale and a Porsche shell. I really liked it so I may have to find one myself! There was also a box with 2 incomplete cars(1/10 buggies of some sort) which made £310. I wish I knew more about this stuff!
I am genuinely over the moon for them!
Thanks again for the part you all played in this, without your input, knowledge and word spreading ability, they wouldn't have sold anywhere near as well as they did. It's good to know there are still some genuine, non-mouthpiece people on here!
