or that are particular to the S version ? should be a N18 if I am correct ,oil consumption concerns me ,how do I check that on a test drive, apart from exhaust smoke? obviously timing chain rattle, oil level and filler cap gunk, header tank for signs of oil ,clutch feel /bitting point/gbox.all the electrics work....anything else

seen a 2013 cooper D with 78K on it at £6.5K ,3 owners and fsh apparently? or a cooper S 2012 70K 1 owner fsh £6.4K from a used dealer
Just for the record I have a 2014 Clubvan D. I've had it re-mapped, K&N air filter, active suspension system etc (spent a fortune) The N47 Diesel engine does have a very bad reputation. But when I was looking for a Clubvan I saw many an example with well over 150-250 K miles on them, admittedly I didn't go and see them as I was looking for less than 20K mileage.I did plan to have the head taken off mine to check but haven't got round to having it done, but I just drive it like it likes to be driven (quickly)

Make sure the engine is cold, stone cold. Check the oil level - if it is low it is likely to use excessive oil. My N14 would use about a litre every 700-800 miles and so checking frequently was essential. Not certain but a good indication of previous owners care.....or that are particular to the S version ? should be a N18 if I am correct ,oil consumption concerns me ,how do I check that on a test drive, apart from exhaust smoke? obviously timing chain rattle, oil level and filler cap gunk, header tank for signs of oil ,clutch feel /bitting point/gbox.all the electrics work....anything else
On start up check for a clattery rattle which goes after a free seconds. Signs that the chain tensioner needs some attention.
To be fair, I owned my N14 for six years, and did not have an issue. I suspect a low oil level and time chain woes are intrinsically linked - so if you keep an eye the oil level, the chain should be fine.....

Mine does not use a drop, make sure there is a good history, look for signs of water or corrosion on the gearbox (thermostat) make sure all the doors and windows lock and unlock, make sure the AC works.or that are particular to the S version ? should be a N18 if I am correct ,oil consumption concerns me ,how do I check that on a test drive, apart from exhaust smoke? obviously timing chain rattle, oil level and filler cap gunk, header tank for signs of oil ,clutch feel /bitting point/gbox.all the electrics work....anything else
so the car was ok, drove fine ,although may be the clutch bit just above half travel ,but no slip.car started with no rattles that i could hear although injectors sounded noisy.some signs of oil seepage on the top rhs of the rocker cover.pipe to aie filter was out and the turbo in take was adrift ,not sure why .Some external scratches along the sides of the car and only one key.dealer wouldnt shift on price so i left him my number .the car felt tight and was 2wd ,which I liked and the wife definitely wants the sunroof on her next car now...the search continues.I did like the sat nav in the speedo centre and other info in there, can this be retro fitted,if so at what price?
Yes to the turbo,

Bought this cooper D about 3 months ago. Paid £4800, 2013, 88k miles, 1 owner, private sale. Done a full service including all discs and pads, 2 new tyres, wheel refurb, and a bloody good detail. Quite happy with it although the engine is a bit of a boat anchor in my opinion, but I am constantly swapping between this and my Legacy 3.0 boxer 6 so that's probably why?
Timing chain is the big one. This seems quite. I'll change the oil regularly and keep an ear it. BMW service intervals are ridiculous.
