This is a VERY good call... I'm liking it a lot! I'm just going to check out the insurance now.ETA - insurance is £770 a year (compared to £500 for the MINI or A3). Definitely a contender - will be keeping my eye on these. Thanks!

I'd get a mk2 Skoda Octavia 2.0TDI 140 PD - same car underneath as mk5 Golf / current A3 but better ride and more planted. Having owned both I'd also say it was better screwed together than the Golf and that many of the materials were of higher quality. These start at around £5k now and in darker hues look pretty smart IMHO.

I've had 2 x A3 Tdi 2.0 (3dr and 5dr) and a MINI 1.4D ONE (75Bhp).
The A3 is a far more relaxed drive, has a bigger boot and as economical. All 3 cars were owned from new, the MINI was a private purchase, the A3s were lease through work.
As for mpg, I had the MINI for only 4000 miles and averaged around 55mpg, not bad considering the engine was so tight. The 3dr A3 would sometimes do 60mpg+ on a 70mph motorway run for prolonged periods. The 5dr averaged around 49mpg. Strange, as the only difference was a little more weight?!
I'f I had the choice, I'd get an A3 1.9tdi, even more frugal, cheaper to buy and just a speedy as the 2.0tdi in the real world.

We have a '53reg mini one d, its actually just been bought and is going next week (getting a cooper S). Its been used as the town run around and done about 35k in it.
Its a great little car, has all of the handling characteristics of the cooper petrol.
Engine feels gutless low down, however has plenty of grunt to nip around town. Superior torque over the cooper makes it great for cruising, A roads and M'ways a complete breeze, much more grunt up the top, sits in 6 gear and pulls nicely.
The comment about noisy engine is void if you ask me, for a diesel its very quiet, comparable to newer BMW and MERC engines. Obviously though in a mini its going to be slightly louder than a typical hatch (A3, Astras etc), but this is because its a mini. V. short wheelbase and compact.
Consumption is good, looking at 45mpg easy. 50 if you take it really easy.
Toyota lump seems bullet proof, not a single problem. Rest of the car pretty well put together aswell.
