mini countryman ...good buy??
Discussion
My wife seems set on a Countryman of some sort. Definitely mk1 as these are in budget. Auto only.
As it will be mostly shorter journeys I am pushing for a petrol.
There's been some good advice here, is the fuel pump issue that common with the Cooper S?
My wife is the sort that reacts to those types of issue as a sign of "unreliability" (maybe she's right) so I am trying to (gently) educate her on these automotive facts of life .

We're away in our cooper D for a few nights. It's a good car in many ways, tons of interior space for starters, but the engine is a complete anchor of a thing. And the gear change is ste. A mini should be fun to drive above all else, unfortunately the drivetrain in ours ruins it.
Still, it looks pretty funky and my wife likes it!

got he wife a cooper S countryman ,as she felt the freelander 2 was getting to big for her.
the fuel pump and clutch had been done by the previous owner, the timing chain i got replaced as a precaution (the old one was fine).so i pray for trouble free motoring for a while, ride is harsh on runflats ,my 3 series was the same, so these will be changed in the future. As a family car its great and looks cool, not the most economical but we dont do long journeys, just keep an eye on the oil levels, they are tricky to check correctly, ours was burning oil but oil stems seals replaced under warranty

Buy one with as small wheels as possible as the ride is awful.
Really that bad? Do tell.A shame as it could have long travel suspension and glide given its high riding stance. However it’s a standard mini underneath.
My 2012 S is on 18s. Swapped the runflats for Pilot Sports which has helped the ride a bit and stopped it tramlining. Still very much an old-school Mini in terms of ride quality though.
Mine is also lowered 30mm on Eibach springs, which gives it a much more Mini-lke stance.
These are good family cars - and a decent drive when sorted - but definitely need to be thought of as a big Mini, not a comfy crossover.

Agreed. Its a big miss from mini on that basis, nothing to stop it going well but riding well with longer travel suspension to boot.Mine is also lowered 30mm on Eibach springs, which gives it a much more Mini-lke stance.

As mentioned before, the wife brought a 2011 countryman Cooper SD, its on 18" wheels, but luckily Not run flats.
So had it a week or so, she loves it, I drove it for a 200 mile round trip for a family get together on Sunday, 4 up with the surprisingly large boot also full. Everyone was very comfortable, rode well, and handled very well i thought, mpg was about mid 50's and generally big thumbs up from us.
