You not at work today Alan?

Anyway question:
Why when the kids are off school, (around 50% of the year it seems), is there such a vast reduction in traffic on the roads? And trains too.
Now i can understand this around school time, after all we wouldn't want the little ones being exposed to the outside would we? (Don't understand this either, i always walked to school and insisted my kids did too), why does it affect commuting traffic?
Now it can't be people taking time off work as nobody gets even half that amount of time off.

Explain please................

I have no idea - I can't work that one out either. I can only think that its people taking time off or working from home, but it doesn't explain the huge reduction people always describe.

I wouldn't know of course - I never see morning traffic jams .... I'm too busy walking the kids to school

A huge percentage of the population are teachers or employed in schools, coupled with all the parents who insist on personally driving their kids to school and impossible public transport or cycle way options available in most cases there will be a notable drop in traffic during holidays. Of course colleges tend to also have the same holiday times and a fair few students drive.

It certainly is a issue which could be reduced. Especially by having more good parents such as our lovely Mrs Blue Cerbera! thumbup

Still can't this makes much difference Steph, for instance in Ketterinski there how many schools? 10 - 15 maybe? Can't imagine that would make much of a dent.
And as for folk staying of work to look after kids, how many people get anything even close to that much holiday.
Also why on earth should that make a difference at 6am? Schools don't open till 9 do they?
Also why would this affect the train to London?

Anyway i don't care it means it will take me under 15 minutes to get home form the station rather than nearer 30 and 50+ mpg rather than 40, so hurrah for whatever it is!

66 schools and nurseries in Kettering 10 of which are secondary schools with a high employee and pupil rate.

I'd say that's quite a lot of traffic contribution!

Tailgating. Really is becoming a major problem these days... let 'em overtake, then report them for dangerous driving. Insist on a complaint no and that will guarantee them a visit from the BIB even if not taken further. Boils my kidney juice.

got caught up in the incident on the M1 this evening, closed between 14 and 15, took nearly 3 hours to get home!
and on 2 occasions saw people who felt that they were so important that they didn't need to sit in the traffic and promptly drove up the hard shoulder. really makes my blood boil when people do that furious
Also saw a guy driving in the traffic whilst using his laptop!

Thats when you need a flamer kit. I had the same situation once. Bearing in mind im never in anyones way. This tosser was right up my arse. I was stuck behind another car so unless he thought I was going to levitate over the top?? I wished then I had a flamer kit so I could just flick the switch and watch the bonnet of his car smoulder

A Volvo driver (surprise, surprise) around 60 years old (the driver - not the car) on the A14 this morning carving in and out of the outside lane passing cars on the inside and then cutting out again.

He had no regard whatsoever for his own safety or that of other road users and was farcing gaps were there weren't any. He nearly took the front end off my car (no great loss if he had - I was in the Prim :-) )

In the end I just let him go and watched the mayhem he was causing a few cars ahead of me. I was just hoping he'd have a crash and I would have stopped and been happy to pay tribute to his amazing display of stupidity to the cops.

Just a quick thank you to the driver of the Tibbett & Britten lorry that carved out in front of the car ahead of me on the A14 around 7.15am today, causing several vehicles to have to brake hard and then taking in the region of 5 miles to overtake the othert wagon at a steady 56mph.

I hope it improved your day and that you got there 4 seconds faster than you otherwise would have. I doubt it though since I saw, in my mirror, the other wagon passing you again! banghead

Edited to add: Only another 6 working days of A14 commuting to go! Whoohoo!!!!

You get a big hairy trucker answer, requesting which car you are in behind him and if you'd like to put forward your views "personally" hehe

And this morning.....

White Transit Van that decided to pull out on me as I was alongside in moving traffic queues almost pushing me into the central barrier- I hit the horn and btaked but he just kept on comimg. I barely managed to miss him and after he had overtaken the wagon he was pulling out to pass, he pulled bak in again and waved sorry. It didn't quite match his actions though. furious He obviously subscribes to the "I can doi what I like as long as I appear to apologise after" school of thought!

The other less than considerate driver was in a Sucof in a 2 lane queue of slow moving traffic and was leaving a gap of around 200 yards! Why???? Lets all do it!

And number 3, although not really impacting on anyone else just annoys me. A coach with a tinsel Merry Christmas banner across the top of the front windows. Why? I thought Christmas was in December circa the 25th.

You can probably tell that it was a bad journey this morning.

Only 4.5 more A14 commutes to go = 567 miles

This morning was a good one for pillock spotting:

A gaggle of 5 or 6 lorries playing leapfrog managed to hold up the traffic flow for at least 5 miles. Not as if there was one overtake each but re-overtaking each other as they hit uphill/downhill strtches and right/left bends.

I was amazed when a Golf Gti driver let me out of a side turning yikes

A C class Merc that was weaving in and out of lanes, no indication, and forcing people to let him out and in by intimidation

My favourite though was a white Mercedes LWB van cruising down the A14 on the bootlid of the car in front while the petite middle aged lady driver was holding her mobile phone in her left hand and had her right hand index finger in her right ear presumably to try and block out the van noise. rolleyes I bet she would be one of the first to vote to bring back hanging for speeding offences

You're gonna miss these when I don't do the A14 trawl anymore, Aren't you?

Stupid enough but on the other side were a couple of truck doing the o.oo1mph difference dance, how the hell there wasn't a pile up don't know.

Travelling on A45 between the A14 and raunds, dry clear 11 am so roads empty. I came up behind a lady driving a ford. When the road was clear I decided to overtake her, indicated pulled out and accelerated (as you do) as I got level with her back I saw she was tailgating another car. I just knew she was going to do this - she suddenly pulled out, I had to do an emergency stop.

I was reading an article in "Sprint" written by the "Ride Drive" guys the other day, It was one in a series of articles about the overtaking manoeuvre and according to them you should have avoided this situation by moving out into the overtake position and hamging back for a moment to ensure the vehicle in front of you wan not concealing another by closely following it.

However, despite the above I have some sympathy as this seems to happen more and more where road users are completely unaware of what is going on around them and there's no planning in any manoeuvre. It's left to the few of us with some observation skills to try and avoid the other muppets and make up for their shorcomings.

ERRRRR thats exactly what I did and it worked because I saw she was tailgating. Still had to hit the anchors otherwise I would have been up her arse.

My last joiurney to Cambridge this morning and it was action packed all the way.

I'd like to thank all of the following:

The amazing undertaking Audi TT that was carving in and out.

The wagon that came up the inside lane, passing the traffic in the outside lane, and flashed me (I was cruining at 75 in the inside lane)! I don't know where he thought I was going to go.

The small van that pulled out behind me from the inside lane into the nose to tail queue of the outside lane & flashed me - Again, I don't know where I was expecetd to go as I was alongside a stream of nose to tail lorries, with cars in font of me.

The ar*e that backed out of his drive (at speed) in front of me on one of the rural roads.

The 4X4 with no lights on at 7.30am on rural road heading towards me on the wrong side of the road!
