What a mess. Whole thing has been a farce.
It was, sad that the BBC devote 2 hours of coverage and which non-rowers and neutrals enjoy once a year, ruined by idiots.

Cracking first half of the race, one of the best I can remember in recent years, up until the retard went for a swim. Had it not been for that, I think Oxford would have won as they were slightly ahead with an advantage to come. Felt sorry for the umpire with such an eventful race, but he was shouting 'Oxford' before the clash, as he he been doing a lot of before the restart. So in terms of that, it was rub of the green for Oxford. I hope they shut the 'protestor' in a room with the Oxford crew for half an hour!

So, overall, a hollow victory for Cambridge. I wouldn't want to win under those circumstances, be better to have a rerun next weekend.

Relieved to hear the guy was sitting up and hope he makes a quick recovery.

As a former Oxford student and rower I have no complaints about the clashing incident, it was impatient in the extreme by our cox and all the umpire seemed to be saying both before and after the restart was "Oxford".

It's all the more galling when the race really was there for the taking as we are usually better in rough water and held on well in the first half.

I hope Woods is ok. I have bad memories of my ex suffering from very impaired vision one year due to exhaustion - he was of a similar weight and size to Woods, and half an hour on oxygen sorted him out.

Do you think the boats were too close for the restart?

Probably not, but that's a call for the umpire to make, and he was happy for them to go.

My problem with Zoe was that she was incroaching well before the restart and was seemingly taking coxing lessons from Acer Nethercott and being a petulant bugger and just not listening when persistently being told to move away.

Her position at the end whn protesting was that she didn't have enough time to move over, however what I heard was her being warned about 7 or 8 times in the minute before the clash, and that is enough time for a rudder change to take effect (according to my best mate who is a cox herself).

That was a bit disappointing - it was set up to be a nice close race with Oxford having the edge. I hope they throw the book at that guy for causing such disruption irked Though I did think initially someone had caught a monster crab and been ejected! eek
I wonder if in future races the coxes will keep the boats a bit further apart - surely not worth the risk of a lost blade like that?

Oxford started brightly from Middlesex, gaining a small advantage but nothing decisive around the first part of the course, though the Oxford cox was the more warned of the two during the first stages for her line.

Going into the Surrey bend starting to give Cambridge the advantage, Oxford hold on well around the outside and the two crews are pretty much level at the 2 mile point when a man in the centre of the river (in fact very close to the Oxford oars) is spotted and the race is halted.

As the current is taking the crews towards the finish, the decision is made to take them back to the Eyot and start from there, leaving some time for the wash from the launches to calm down. Just before the restart the umpire tells the crews that they need to be 4 metres apart but is seemingly happy for them to start much closer than that. Oxford, knowing that they only have a minute or 2 of rowing before the bends comes back in their favour make a very good rolling start and begin to pull ahead. The Oxford cox is constantly warned about incroaching (about 6 or 7 times in a minute) but doesn't move and the clash of oars results in the Oxford 6 man losing the bottom half of his blade.

Umpire makes the decision that the clash was Oxford's fault and allows the race to continue, Cambridge pulling easily ahead for the win. After the finish line, the Oxford cox tries to protest that she didn't have time to make the move, but umpire rejects the protest. Alex Woods, the Oxford bow man, then collapses in the boat through exhaustion and has to be transferred to a launch for medical attention before being taken to Charing Cross hospital.

The Boat Race Committee decide no presentation should take place under the circumstances and the whole thing feels a little bit of an anti-climax.

Sure someone can add in anything I missed.

Thanks.

At what distance was the race stopped then and was the restart done mid course or back at the start?
