Picked up my race pack from the Excel this afternoon, so all set for London now.
What's the aim?smn159 said:
Still prevaricating. Trained for 3:30, which should just be achievable on a good day, but missed a chunk of training with the flu and then injury. My current pacing plan comes out at 3:42 so likely to go with that. Got an ongoing toe issue that may or may not cause a problem on the day, but planning for success!
All the best mate! Hope the toe holds up! Let us know how you got on! joshcowin said:

I hope it’s all gone well for people today. The weather looks to have been kind.

What a run from Sifan Hassan in the women’s elite race
First official marathon
Stopped twice for a few seconds at around the hour mark to stretch out and deal with a niggle
Kept missing feed stations
Caught back up to the leaders
Outkicked them all to win
Coming into The Mall with the top three all in a group was great stuff
Awesome run from Kiptum in the men’s too

Although it’s London marathon day, I’m thinking about doing my first half marathon.
I normally run 20 to 25 km a week. Usually a couple of ten and a bit k runs. Occasionally a park run with a top up either side to make 10k. I struggle to fit anything more in.
I’m late 40s, run sub 50 for 10k, and I’m 22 and a bit mins for 5k. Built more like a maxi, than a metro though.
I’ve often got injured soon after doing 14k plus, when moving to that slightly longer distance. But have upped my stretching and that seems to have helped.
I’m not planning to enter a race, just up my distance to 14, 16, 18k and then slip in a 21km one day.
Any thoughts on my plan … I don’t want to end up injured and out for 3 months … and in particular on “fuelling” don’t bother for 14km.
Thanks, Austin.

It's perfectly achievable. I would book myself a nice little half marathon and get a little medal for it.
No real need to "fuel" for a half, especially given your aim is "finish".
What sort of injuries are we talking about beyond 14k? My knees couldn't cope with long distance road events but I then went and did 30k off-road without any drama. Since then I moved fully to trail events and touch wood it seemed to have solved any issues. It does mean hills (867m of ascent on Saturday, that was a little extreme), but although I hate them at that time I tell myself they're probably good for me!

I'm looking at, I think, the Erewash canal half which is run down the canal paths in long Eaton. So mostly flat and a bit of softer ground to run on. Though it's going to be bang in the height of summer....Muzzer79 said:

Was a deeply impressive performance. With a little more experience, better pacers and the right conditions the Womens record is under serious threat from Hassan. She made it past a top class field (last years winner and the Olympic Champ) so it was really something special. First official marathon

Thanks for all the replies. Managed to do both Achilles tendons after one muddy 14k, that took a while to fix, but I now stretch before and after every run.
Had pain in the bones of my feet - but like plantar but wasn’t - podiatrist sorted out custom insoles which I think help.
Got shin splints - seems to have gone … so it’s just niggly stuff.
My right knee is not great … so Off road sounds like a reasonable idea …
On fuelling, nowt at all?!

I run a half marathon every week. I never fuel on the run, just a decent breakfast beforehand - porridge, banana, the usual drill - and a recovery drink at the end.Managed to do both Achilles tendons after one muddy 14k, that took a while to fix, but I now stretch before and after every run.

Fuelling is over-used in my view. You see these people out on 5/10k runs with energy gels - Totally unnecessary IMO, at least for the amateur.
I only fuel on the run for distances above half-marathon.

But fuelling on the run? I find that unnecessary for sub-half marathon distances.

Fuelling before the run can be however you choose - porridge or something similar, or indeed an energy drink/gel if you're gastro-sensitive.

I take a gel at 8-10 miles for 'placebo' boost even if it's not needed. But fuelling on the run? I find that unnecessary for sub-half marathon distances.
