I don't get it.

Let's say the three opponents are Whyte, Fury and AJ all at Wembley. There's a real possibility Wlad losses all three of those. In which case, who is going to tune in to see AJ wup a has-been in the third fight?

i don't really get these mad amounts of money being bandied around but i think we have to look at the road down the line for dazn....

as per the link posted by hyphen on the previous page...dazn are going to make far more money globally from targeted advertising than they ever will from the actual fights themselves. ... we tend to think of boxing as the only thing they are concerned with but it's one sport of many. also, we tend to think of boxing as america-centric....it's not. it's an important territory no doubt but the rest of the world is, combined, WAY bigger.... klitschko is obviously a key player for them in germany, eastern europe etc...

Advertising will be important, no doubt. That is probably one reason why Dentsu, the Japanese ad agency bought a 10% stake in DAZN last year for $300m.

I personally though don't think DAZN will be around long term. And that is despite knowing they have some very well funded backers.

Their original plan was to buy up undervalued sports rights, package them up and put them together to create something of value which would attract subscribers. They specifically said they didn't want to compete in the UK market as sports rights, specifically Premier Leauge football, is too expensive (with the continual bidding war between BT and Sky).

But they seem to have turned that strategy on its head by going after boxing in the US, and paying money which is not sustainable. Even with the best ad strategy in the world allowing targeted video ads (which is only really achievable with streamed content) it doesn't make sense in a sane world.

So far I think they will have committed to spend around $4bn in sport rights fees (that is just an estimate, taking forward an estimate published last year). So they are going to lose a lot of money each year, for the next few years. That is going to get painful at some point.

And they seem to have picked boxing currently as their primary target for their US subscribers. Except boxing is a niche sport in the US. In a stable market, they won't be able to get the revenues from US subscriber willing to pay a regular $10 / month to compete against the existing PPV model.

If they do really have deep pockets and a desire to dominate, they needed to wait a bit and throw the big money at the major US sports like baseball, basketball and American football.

I was going to call it The Tubby Tuscaneer UK Hall Of Fame though, your loss as how else would you get a mention in there hehe

Interesting article in Forbes, TopRank have made their youngest every signing at 16 - one to watch. Amateur record of 118-14 en route to 11 USA and Puerto Rican national championships

Just on DAZN, they have just announced their subscription cost is doubling to $20 / month, unless you pay for a year in advance.

If they were raking in subscribers by the bucketload, they would have left their pricing alone and let subscriber numbers build for the next few months. This suggests to me they are getting a lot of people buying it for one month and cancelling it after the fight they wanted to watch has aired. This is exactly the problem Box Nation faced....

Doubling the cost and asking people to buy for a year in advance when they don't know the schedule is going to narrow their market significantly.

Dazn USA changing tactics- they launched on a $9.99, cancel anytime banner.

Today they have changed to steering customers to yearly contracts at $99.99 ($8.33 pm), monthly still exists but now double at $19.99

that's the bit i don't get, why pick on boxing ?? it's not like 100 years ago where it was absolutely the number one draw.....i'm not gonna say it's unpopular but christ, it's dwarfed by pretty much any other mainstream sport not just in the states but over this side of the atlantic too..

I think they made a mistake, probably linked to their haste trying to launch in the US. They started with a UK promotor who knew little about the US boxing market but was prepared to throw around big money like confetti (after all, it was someone else's money).

But that didn't work, so they basically bet the farm on Canelo by doing a deal with Golden Boy. And making the argument it was the "end of PPV".

Except that just gained subscribers who really only liked Canelo, so they would subscribe and then cancel the following month. After all, the number of people like us who are interested in a wide range of fighters is relatively small.

So they signed up with GGG promotions, and offered him crazy money, on the basis he would appeal to a different demographic. (I suspect they have a number of clever pie charts at head office showing the reach of different boxers with each demographic. So for example they wanted to reach the Hispanic market which is why they were so keen to get Mikey Garcia, before they got Canelo).

And they took on John Skipper, after he had to leave ESPN under a cloud when someone tried to blackmail him by threatening to expose his long term drug use. So they have someone used to paying big money for sports rights. But the key difference is that they (ESPN) already had massive viewing figures and the backing of Disney.

So now, because their plans are not working, they have doubled their monthly subscription cost. You have to ask how long it will be before they introduce PPV back as well....they will just keep the cost lower at say $25 per fight (Again this is exactly what happened with Box Nation).

Hearn playing games again putting on big fights on same night? like he does with Warren. Not sure who is showing Wilders fight in UK. BT or ITV?

Yeah, should be a good one. It will be interesting to see how he handles the step up in weight, especially against Ortiz. Pitching himself at a decent level, and with a fighter who has more to prove than to lose. Hopefully, we will be able to see it in the UK without too much hassle.

It's all go today, Fury is supposed to be fighting Tom Schwarz next in the summer in Vegas. Can't say it's exciting.
