I don't think that's right. I am (was?) a big fan but ER got a wildcard for the (Porsche title sponsored) Stuttgart open. Maybe it is just a coincidence that she is also sponsored by Porsche and that she would have got one anyway. But there are only 28 direct entries! She is 68th in the WTA rankings... Far more deserving players before her IMO.
Not only that but it looks like she chose to not represent her country in the Billie Jean King Cup tie vs France (which GB lost) to prepare for the event...
She'd better win against Ostapenko later today...

Has she ever played in any international tournaments or the Olympics? Maybe she would decide to represent Canada which she also holds citizenship for? Damn. 10’s her doubles ranking.
But she was No. 5 in singles for a while and seems pretty good value at 23rd.
True. She has been inconsistent but when she is on one, you know about it But she was No. 5 in singles for a while and seems pretty good value at 23rd.
What strikes me is that down one set and 2 breaks, ER didn't try another strategy, any strategy, slow things down, moon balls, drop shots, slice, ghost netting, anything. She seemed confident that something was going to change. With coaching allowed, didn't they tell her to try something??

She is 23rd in the live rankings but still.
ER down to 83 there.
As of this afternoon ER is now out of the top 100 in the WTA Singes live rankings, at 101, and if she doesn't do well in Madrid may well not be British Singles Ladies No.1 for much longer as Jodie Burrage is now 104 in the live rankings and aiming to qualify for the main draw in Madrid after a 2-0 win in the first round of qualifying today.ER down to 83 there.

She will get a qualifier in the first round (could be tricky), if she wins will have Swiatek in round two (good luck with that).abzmike said:

Is tennis really the right place for her I wonder. She seems on a steep downward slope with no signs of any return to any sort of form. Our other female players are better, tougher and frankly more likely to achieve decent results. Maybe the US Open was her moment and it's time to move on to something new. https://www.skysports.com/tennis/news/12110/128667...

Nothing else is going to pay her that sort of cash and she will milk it as long as possible. Then retire in a few years and move on to commentating Wimbledon.
She's the epitome of a one hit wonder.

I don't think she should give up quite yet... Although the press conference this week was a bit weird.
