I don't think that's right. I am (was?) a big fan but ER got a wildcard for the (Porsche title sponsored) Stuttgart open. Maybe it is just a coincidence that she is also sponsored by Porsche and that she would have got one anyway. But there are only 28 direct entries! She is 68th in the WTA rankings... Far more deserving players before her IMO.

Not only that but it looks like she chose to not represent her country in the Billie Jean King Cup tie vs France (which GB lost) to prepare for the event...

She'd better win against Ostapenko later today... biglaugh

Has she ever played in any international tournaments or the Olympics? Maybe she would decide to represent Canada which she also holds citizenship for?

Bit of a thumping. If she’d been able should have gone to the BJK cup and got some game time.
Onwards and upwards…

On the plus side it was a useful 59 min warm up practice session for Osta, just not sure it was worth the waste of a WC.
Starting to agree that Challengers might not be such a bad idea after all but not sure the sponsors or even IMG would be happy.

Not exactly a surprise to get taken out by the world No.10.
But not encouraging to have gone out easily.

Properly beaten by Ostapenko today.. These are going to be Emma's real challenges over the coming years, and the players she'll have to beat... No easy task. Ostapenko is so strong, and when her attacking a game is working, difficult to beat...

She is 23rd in the live rankings but still.

ER down to 83 there.

Damn. 10’s her doubles ranking.
But she was No. 5 in singles for a while and seems pretty good value at 23rd.

True. She has been inconsistent but when she is on one, you know about it hehe

What strikes me is that down one set and 2 breaks, ER didn't try another strategy, any strategy, slow things down, moon balls, drop shots, slice, ghost netting, anything. She seemed confident that something was going to change. With coaching allowed, didn't they tell her to try something??

As of this afternoon ER is now out of the top 100 in the WTA Singes live rankings, at 101, and if she doesn't do well in Madrid may well not be British Singles Ladies No.1 for much longer as Jodie Burrage is now 104 in the live rankings and aiming to qualify for the main draw in Madrid after a 2-0 win in the first round of qualifying today.

She will get a qualifier in the first round (could be tricky), if she wins will have Swiatek in round two (good luck with that).

Not getting any easier for Emma. 2023 looks at best, challenging! But to be fair, it needs to be.....

Out of the Madrid Open before it has even started - hand injury. Out of the Top100 as well.

Feel sorry for her. She should try not to dwell on her ranking. Write off the rest of the clay court season and concentrate on getting fit for Wimbledon. Hopefully revitalised and with a wild card entry she can find a bit of form and rebuild from there.

Is tennis really the right place for her I wonder. She seems on a steep downward slope with no signs of any return to any sort of form. Our other female players are better, tougher and frankly more likely to achieve decent results. Maybe the US Open was her moment and it's time to move on to something new.

Why? She's made a killing from sponsorship and set herself up for life.

Nothing else is going to pay her that sort of cash and she will milk it as long as possible. Then retire in a few years and move on to commentating Wimbledon.

She's the epitome of a one hit wonder.

I don't think she should give up quite yet...

Although the press conference this week was a bit weird.
