How she dealt with that crowd was incredibly mature, I’d have felt embarrassed had Fernandez got that reception at Wimbledon.

Don't think any players get that sort of reception at Wimbledon, do they?

Super star and so down to earth. She's got to be up there for spoty
No-one else will come close to her for SPOTY.
Without talking down her incredible achievement, there is some serious competition this year. Cav, matching Merckx’s record of Tour wins, Jason Kenny as the leading British Olympic gold medalist, possibly Lewis Hamilton if he picks up his eighth title. And those are just the front runners.

Think there hasn’t be a women’s winner since 2004 ? So that might help in her favour

I think she's absolutely awesome. Love that her Instagram has not been cleansed. Nice photos of her from years back doing normal things with everyday folk.

Love that she went to Grammar school.

A lot of inspiration for normal every day kids

Her tennis is awesome. Love that she gets up early from time outs to pressure the opponent. Return of serve is ridiculous. Love that she does not chase down every ball. If she's not going to get to a ball, why chase and deplete energy. Sensible

Looking forward to following her career

Keep smashing it Emma (she's a Motorsport fan so not inconceivable she comes to PH!}

Perhaps the scale of her achievement hasn’t sunk in yet. Not to put down any of the other achievements but to win a Grand Slam event (something no British women has done since 1977) at only your second event, to do so as a qualifier and to not drop a set is something I don’t think will ever be equalled.

Sarah Storey is also another awesome female contender.

For impact, none of those come close to what Emma did yesterday - she will win it by a landslide.

Current odds are 1/9 for Emma and 12/1 for the next best. That's a certainty. Undoubtedly, there's been some great achievements by many British sports stars this year, but Emma's gone to another level. And she does the 'personality' bit of sports personality, it's not just about her sporting achievement

Great as the other achievements are I think she will win. So many firsts…

It will be nice to get a winner with a personality, sometimes that doesn't happen!

Good at carting as well apparently, so could have easily gone the way of being a racing driver, but chose tennis.

I had nothing against Fernandez and thought she must be decent after Emma talked about her giving everyone cupcakes when it was her birthday. Moaning within Emma's earshot about the time out wasn't sporting though. Obviously it was frustrating but it wasn't Emma's choice, I assume it's a rule to suspend the game if someone is bleeding onto the court as it's a hygiene and safety issue and it affected Emma's momentum at a crucial point for her. Emma had to play on to the end of the set at Wimbledon when she requested medical attention and that was when she was struggling to breathe.

The Americans were on a patriotic high with it being 9/11 and were clearly favouring the Canadian as the closest thing to an American they had in the final. It would have only been a more favourable crowd for Emma's opponent if she'd been playing someone from the USA. Emma herself was actually born in Canada.
I am not sure why Fernandez was complaining. Did she expect Emma to carry on playing with blood dripping down her leg? Not to mention it couldn’t have happened at a worse time for Emma as she had to step up after the break and try to save a break point (which of course she did).

I assume there were a lot of Canadians in the crowd but then the US commentary on ESPN was biased in Fernandez’s favour too).
On Amazon they said the US fans would have more affinity for a Canadian over a "European".

Great result & fabulous run of high quality wins.
I don’t think Fernandez did herself any favours with the bleeding issue. She came across as petulant & what exactly was Raducanu supposed to do?
SPOTY can’t really go to anyone else, given the scale of the historic win.

Am still buzzing this morning after this young ladies wonderful victory..! Yes, Fernandez did have quite a moment when Emma fell, cutting her leg at such a crucial point in the match - But overall, their emotions were restricted, yet positive when they won those hard earned points..
Certainly none of that moaning and berating nonsense we have seen elsewhere in tennis....!
Just hope she can keep those who have got her to this point close because so many now will offer Emma advise on how to progress, but I do think she, even at such a young age is very capable of knowing who she needs around her.
The challenge for her will change when the nation starts expecting results from her, and she will have to get used to loses in order to learn more. But what a start, recovered from the 4th round withdrawal when she couldn't breath - That's scary..!
But at the US Open 10 matches, 10 wins, no sets lost and is US Champion.
It will be a joy to follow this young lady in tennis....

You can get 1/8 currently apparently. It amazes me that you can get any odds at all https://www.oddschecker.com/awards/sports-personal...
My initial reaction was that it's very hard for a woman to win SPOTY - but looking through the list of other names it's hard to get excited about any of the other options and there's not a lot happening between now and the end of the year.

It looked more painful with each reply! There's much worse sports injuries but it brought back childhood memories of life-threatening asphalt burns
