No idea what to do next - probably another in Europe next year
I can wholeheartedly recommend Lanzarote. I'll be going back soon - it just an amazing event. An iconic race. Amazing spectators & support, brutal conditions, ruggedly beautiful island and an embrace with the legend, Kenneth Gasque, at the finish. There's the 17hr time limit for official finishers there, but noone goes home until the last person crosses the line. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.whatleytom said:
Full race report written now!
And a rather excellent read it was Tom - top bombing! Well done on your PB - all tri races have their waves of highs and lows and you did mighty well to get through a low so soon in your race to finish 40 mins quicker than last time out. Great pic at the end, btw. Got "YES!!!!" written all over it Oh, that bike of yours is something else too. Absolutely lovely piece of kit!

I told them I had failed
I don't know what went wrong in your preparation or race, but a DNF isn't a failure. It's something to learn from. You lined up and gave it a go and that's a great deal more than most people have ever done. Experienced IM competitors DNF - it's nothing to be ashamed of. Work out what went wrong, fix it and get stuck in again Managed to get my first century in at the weekend, by the way. It was a local sportive and didn't bother checking the route - thought they'd probably be kind to the participants.
How wrong was I?!!!! Properly hard ride!!
160k & 3060m of climbing.
I think I spotted 5 or 6 20%+ gradient signs en-route. In addition to those, there were 3 significant (7% avg) climbs over 4K long.
Tough day in the saddle
Finished strong though in 6hr 20m - could happily have got my running legs on*.
*Didn't though. Went to beach though and had fish and chips instead

Great report Tom - thoroughly enjoyed reading that - congrats on the PB and for sticking it out when the mind demons started to play! Well done, double IronMan at 26 - not too shabby at all!!!! Stylus said:
Once that is done I'm going back for another Iron Man attempt; I will get that medal!
Of that I have no doubt. Great honest report, but don't by any means consider the DNF as a failure. Really powerful to use this as motivation for your next races - all the very best as your tri season starts in Oct!
Last blog update before The Outlaw this Sunday!
Good Luck to all other competitors and those doing IM Switzerland this weekend.
All the very best for a great safe race

Another blog read, another case of bike envy- nice bit of kit! Fantastic about your Dad's SQN number too.
Very well done to Esuuv & Tom on completion, great times as well - ones I could only dream of ! Stylus, well done at giving it a go, despite the popularity of these events getting bigger & bigger the size of the task does not get any smaller, it's still an awfully long day.
Gav, good luck for next week, at least there are no planes to catch this time .....

Can someone explain please why during the commonwealth games tri's: a) they're allowed to draft, and b) aero bikes seem to be banned?
They're allowed to draft under the professional triathlon rules, they do it at the olympics and ITU/ETU/other pro races too. Us normies aren't allowed because it can be dangerous - edit: Drafting is banned in the pro Ironman events however
Cracking race which England dominated just now. I'd absolutely love to have a go at the mixed relays

Are you a member of a triathlon club? If so get yourself along to the national relayshttp://www.onestepbeyond.org.uk/national-club-rela...

International games tend to use the same set up as ITU triathlon. Draft legal which is what elite triathlon sprint and olympic distance are contested with. This means the riders are in groups and so TT bikes aren't allowed as its too dangerous to ride on extensions in groups. If there's any need to brake suddenly you can't and you will skewer the person in front. Some riders will have mini extensions on their road bikes just to be a bit more aero but most of the riders don't bother with them. Mike Random said:
Why would you use a TT Bike on an Iron Man? is it purely aero? if so why don't they use them more often in regular races?
Whats a good TT Bike for 1.5/2k
Mike
Ironman is non drafting and so competitors will want to eek out any time saving they can get on the bike by being more aero. Easiest way to do this is to ride a TT bike. The positioning also allows you to recruit slightly different muscle groups than a road bike which means in theory you should run better off the bike leg. As above, if its a draft legal event, no TT bikes. Whats a good TT Bike for 1.5/2k
Mike
There's quite a few good bikes up to that price range, but they're all really dictated by fit as the geometries vary massively. If you're keen on dropping 2k on a TT bike then spend £100-£150 first on bike fit, they'll be able to tell you the stack and reach that suits you and so recommend frames that will fit.
Thanks chaps. My only experience is of Half IMs were you're not allowed to draft. Now you explain why I can see their point, there are some shocking bike handling skills within the Tri community.
I have to say I think it's a shame though at that level as it essentially means the fastest runner has a big advantage.

Great effort Esuuv & Tom, seems like there is more in the tank as well. Maybe next year
Why did they change the bike course?
Not sure if any of you have or are considering doing an F3 events tri but I would urge against it. I did the Marlow half iron on the weekend. To summarize changed the swim course the morning of the race as we were getting in to the water, started with a bloke shouting ready steady GO, water station didn't have 'proper' water bottles, ran out of cups, water and gels at some point on each of the two feed stations during the run and extremely poor security of the transition area which was a free for all as it wasn't marked in anyway shape or form.
You certainly get what you pay for and this is a very very good example.
I have done a number of F3 events over the years and they have been fine for all of them. I've done the sportives and several open water races. I am signed up for the sprint tri on the 10th of August. Obviously this is a much shorter event than a HI, but hopefully it will go well Why did they change the bike course?
