If you don’t mind, please don’t heap any expectation on Scotland…

I have to say that, as an England fan, I’m embracing the “we’re st and we know we are” zeitgeist.

It’s all rather liberating.

To quote John Pullin, the England captain who led his team to Dublin at the height of the troubles in 1973, the year after Wales and Scotland had refused to travel, "We may not be the greatest team in the World, but at least we turn up!"

Same table at this stage as last year so England still on for 3rd.

Isn't that defeatist? After complaining about Jones' tactics and then embracing no improvement at all?

But then, as a Kiwi, we expect to win everything and have a complete meltdown if we don't. biggrin

Yup, at least a bit. But also realistic. It’s clear that England are quite a way off where they need to be and with a total change of coaching team (Cockers off too I see) it’s obviously a transitional phase.

Still, hasn’t stopped me sitting on tickets to all of England’s RWC pool games and for the final.

It really is the hope that kills you.

And, the ABs don’t ever lose do they? There’s always some technical reason why the scoreboard appears to be backwards wink

Anyway, cracking weekend ahead. Ireland vs France is the game we’ve all been waiting for. A resurgent Scottish team should have the edge over Wales but do they believe? And given how Italy went against France we could be in for a tight, nervy game at Twickenham.

Exactly. It seems it’s a national disgrace for the team to lose under Jones but perfectly ok for it to lose under Borthwick. Because, err, transition or something. Still, with four more games before the RWC we have plenty of time to ace the transition…

Less flippantly, this is exactly why the RFU has fked this up: it has written off England’s 2023 RWC appearance by sacking Jones when it did. The logic - assuming there was any - is that the RFU must have thought that England would do no better in France in the autumn under Jones than they would do as a scratch side. Which is - at least in IMO - idiotic. It’s perfectly OK to dislike Jones as a coach as well as a person but you’d be bonkers to bet against him getting the best out of his team in a major tournament a that’s basically his “thing”.

Which I totally agree with.

If you read the press down under the Shackle Draggers think England were mad to ditch him and it's a dream come true for them.

I would say after this weekend there will be a better picture of how the 6N is going to pan out.

We don't know what the atmosphere in the dressing room was like, though.

Just look at Quins. They sacked Gustard whilst languishing in mid table and looking pretty dreadful, and promptly went on to win the Prem primarily by giving creative free reign to their players to play what they saw in front of them - something that would be anathema to Jones.

Sometimes all it needs is change! After all, the England squad are, for the most part, the best, most experienced players in the English game, so it's not as though they don't have the ability to perform at the highest level. I don't see why giving them a different framework to play in couldn't see a pretty rapid turnaround.

I doubt the atmosphere in the dressing room is any better after throwing the six nations in the bin at the first outing. After this tournament they'll get what, three more games to turn it around? Not looking good.

People can accept that change doesn't happen overnight. It's much harder to put up with things not changing.

Basically you’re hoping for a repeat of RWC 2007.
