Played in a Mizuno scramble at Ely this morning.

We got very lucky with the weather. It started raining as we walked off the 18th green biggrin

Our team indexes were (ish) 5, 7, 11 and 17. Giving us 7 shots.

We were 7 under gross on the front 9, but slowed a bit on the back being only 1 under with three to play. But, we managed to birdie the final 3 holes to finish 11 under gross, for 18 under net, or 54 points.

We won lowest gross and came 4th in the net. woohoo
You got lucky, the e-mail landed pretty early yesterday to confirm that the course was closed and so no twilight golf would be happening...not that I'd have played in that rain anyway but it should be decent for a Friday knock after a dry day today/Friday...

Is that the first time you've played Ely? How did you find it?

When we go and play elsewhere, it's often a reminder of how tough it can be compared to other courses!

I’ve played Ely probably a dozen times. It’s actually the nearest course to where I live, but I prefer St Ives so joined there.

I’m playing Ely again on Sunday with the boy as he has a junior comp there on Tuesday, so hopefully its dried out a bit by then.

I thought it was in really good condition considering the recent weather. I was a bit worried about how the greens would be after seeing the practice green, but they were mostly pretty good and ran well. It was a lot better than the last time I played there in autumn when I thought the course was in pretty poor condition.

Booked in here on Thursday for 18, looks impressive!
I played there back in 2022. Only my 3rd ever round of golf so I couldn't really comment on how challenging it was but the scenery was absolutely gorgeous. Bit jealous, tbh, I want to go back!
You weren't joking about the scenery - absolutely stunning place. It was tough as well, very very narrow with plenty of water, and lots of opportunities to lose a ball. Lost 4 in the end on the way to shooting 90 which I'm strangely proud of.

Reason being the rental clubs really didn't suit me at all, having lightweight graphite shafts through the set. Meant it was a bit of a lottery as to what position the club head was in at impact hehe

Still a very enjoyable afternoon, despite waiting on pretty much every st. Still got round in 4 hours and it just gave me more time to admire the scenery.

Couple of pics:

I've decided to sell my Mizuno 225 irons after 2 years of toil, I don't know what it is (probably me) but I'm just far more consistent with my old Nike's. Anyone recommend the best and most painless way to recoup some of my loss? I'm thinking eBay or possibly Golfbidder, any experience or advice gratefully received.

Ebay will be your best bet. Look out of 80% off selling weekends, and keep an eye on listings for the same clubs to see what they sold for. If you want good money for them stick on a reserve.

Golf Bidder or similar will offer the lowest price, but means you can shift them quickly. Have a look at golf clubs for cash as well.

I feel your pain my course had only just started to recover from the last 6 months of rain, Wednesday was the last thing it needed.

I've only played St Ives once but I really liked it; it's about 100yds from work so I use the range there quite a bit.

I actually can't remember autumn but it was bad over winter, either closed or down to 16 holes for a long time which just put me right off playing and I did get a bit sick of it really.

It should be looking good for you and your lad Sunday, though, so best of luck to him...I'm out early early Sunday...

My course went from waterlogged yesterday to green, fully open status today. Not sure how that happened but I'm not complaining. As long as people don't manage to churn it up before I get to play on Sunday, I'm good

No - Oxfordshire / Warwickshire border.

Behind the green there is a stream/brook. If there is lots of water it fills up and breaks its banks.

This was the area earlier this year after constant rain.

This is the same area normally. The 18th green is front lower left, next to it is the chipping green and next to that the putting green. You can see the brook in a curve behind these areas.

Big week next week, two singles matches and one seniors league match. Am v worried about the state of my putting. I've got one of those LAB putters, which I like, but I haven't got used to it yet. I could do with a tip or two from the sages on here to improve the randomness of my aiming and execution, especially on short putts which I'm now expecting to miss. It's a confidence thing borne out of poor technique.
To start with I'm going to try to get shaft and forearm in a straight line (suspect there's an angle between them at present) to take wobbly arms out of it and grip the putter in my hand rather than my fingers.
Any other thoughts gratefully received. I'm not expecting miracles! TIA.

I'm about 6 rounds in with the LAB and it's been so good so far. Averaging 29 putts per round and SG is +1.6 vs a 5hcp

Ive gone down the route of a line on the ball and using this sort of within 15ft it's so hard to miss your start line with this putter.

A tip I got given from those at LAB was to spend a few hours getting use to it by putting with no thumbs on and just allowing to use your shoulders and hands more and let the putter square itself up.

As always, might just be worth a quick lesson to make sure the basics are good.

Had a putting lesson last year when mine went to piss but best tip I had was on the set up, put a golf ball on your eye and drop it when addressing a putt. If it lands on the ball you're addressing it's good - if not get over it.

Do you hold your breath during the backswing?

First round of the regional scratch matchplay last night.

Not swung a club in 7 days and it showed over the first few holes, but got myself together and made some good putts on the back 9 to win 4&2 and a 4-0 win for the team.

Despite the midweek rain, course and greens were lovely, just under 10 on the stimp.

Do you struggle with distance control? Simple thought I use to ‘reset’ my distance control, is swing to my feet to find the distance on the putting green & go from there. So putter goes back to my back foot & through. Do a dozen of those until they all go to within a few inches of each other. Then slowly build out the distances. Helps me get my distance judgement / feel back.

Like anything else. Alignment needs practice.

I would highly recommend a putting mirror. It will help getting your head and eyes set over the ball and the club face square.
If your eyes aren’t properly over the ball, when you look down your line before hitting a putt it will look like you aren’t aiming correctly.

It’s not for everyone, but I also use a line on the ball from 15ft and in. But if you do you have to learn to trust it.
