Back in the early nineties, my set of Mizuno blades were stolen from my garage (along with a lot of other stuff). The insurance coughed up a brand new set of Mizuno TP Original blades, which I still have in mint condition. The clubs are too good for my skills (I use Orlimar irons) so they have hardly been used. I often wonder if someone would buy them.

I went to my local Golf Club today to ask for advice on clubs.
I showed them a video of me on the driving range hitting a ball. They said they'd recommend something with some flex but were not very specific in terms of which clubs. They said about some Taylormade Sims irons which were £500 instore.
The membership at the club (council owned) is up to £1200 a year which is a 7 day access, with all greenfees included and pitch n putt, some other benefits too.
Definitely not doing that but just in case I fall in love with it.

I want some irons - happy to spend a decent amount, say £300-400. This is on second hand clubs through Golfbidder or similar.
I'm confident in hitting the ball, fine on pitch n putt and just want to step up to the proper course.
I asked about a lack of friends into golf. He said that if you join as a member or start playing you start getting invites from loads of people and then find a group.
Also my local club does have a "book a fitting" option. So I suppose I could do that. I'm just reluctant as it will probably be angled at their in-store items and I'm just not in the mood for it. I just want some clubs to get started and actually play.

If it helps (and your based near S London) my dad gave up golf 5 years ago after a motorbike off - have his set (ping G10 driver, G5 (maybe G2) wood, cobra rescues and Calloway big Bertha irons plus bag, oydessy putter, balls, tees etc that I said I'd lost on FB marketplace, expecting to get well below your budget

Sorry to hear about your Dad. Thank you for the kind offer, that's really nice of you. I'm over in Berkshire area, not a million miles away. I'm quite keen on building up my own clubs slowly rather than a full set, but I'll give it a bit of thought as I'm still trying to work out which direction to take. Thanks again

Hey, I didn't but I overlooked that as I resurrected this thread from last year and forgot it had been mentioned. I am looking now. Thousands of clubs, lots of different price points and you can get a complete set if needed. Plus at least here you can look at the clubs, try them, and get some advice. Much better to do that then your local GC who normally have new sets to shift.

I went to Downshire Way Golf Club. They're really nice down there and I've used the driving range (with 2 borrowed clubs) a few times. They've got the ball tracking thing there which tells you how far it went, speed etc.

I went to Downshire Way Golf Club. They're really nice down there and I've used the driving range (with 2 borrowed clubs) a few times. They've got the ball tracking thing there which tells you how far it went, speed etc.
I was going to recommend Downshire. They have decent facilities, and the range has recently been updated with Trackman which is good. The course is pretty good as well, and I they always seem to be busy so must have a good social circle.
Not played but a friend is a member of Windlesham, and said the social side is great.
I would avoid Birds Hills golf, facilities arent great and not a fan of the course.
If you want to get out and play, but dont feel your ready for a full 18 have a look at these:

Have a watch of this video which came out today. From a YT called SAS Golf, based in Newbury and does loads of videos about secondhand golf clubs. Also coaches and I have lessons with him

As the other have said go find a decent set of 2nd hand irons. Never used replay but they look a very good option. Make sure you try out & compare irons thoroughly. I found there were some clubs I just couldn't get on with, no matter how highly rated they were. I didn't used to be able to get on with Calloway irons, but loved their woods.
When I started I bought a cheap set of rubbish for next to nothing. It let me at least see if I liked the game & also evolve a swing. After about 3 months I went out & bought a proper set, That was about 30yrs ago. I've changed the irons once since then. I still carry the 5 wood I bought back then & changed the driver & 3wood once also.
Regarding finding people to play with, I wouldn't worry about it. Particularly if you use Downshire, book a tee time & see who turns up. I restarted playing earlier this year & just booked a tee time for myself at my local course in Spain. Done it several times now & its always been fine.had people to play with. Nobody really minds playing with a higher handicap player as long as they pretty much keep up with play.

Replay were really good. I went last night and one of the staff were really helpful. Showed me 5 different sets (out of about 200) which were regular flex and more forgiving for the average/new golfer. In my budget too (around £300-400).

OP I'm not a million miles from you, but play with a couple of friends at Billingbear Park near Wokingham from time to time. They have two 9-hole courses - the new course is the easy one and is par 3 most of the way around. Other times we go to Lavender Park in Ascot for quick round - it's par 3 all the way round and a nice easy course. Either way, we usually play late afternoon and have a curry afterward at a local restaurant. It's sort of a tradition for us. Both Lavender Park and Billingbear are pay and play courses, meaning no membership is necessary. You can just book a round online and then turn up and play. A round of 9 holes normally costs about £12.
You might want to have a few lessons, and then practice a bit at a driving range. Lavender Park has a good driving range and is all automated - use the machine to fill up a bucket of balls, which you then pour into the machine under the tee in your chosen stand. It then feeds balls onto the tee for you to hit. They also have a Top Tracer system which makes it easier to see where your ball went and you can have a game of virtual golf. Once you've got to the stage where you can play a round (even if not well), perhaps you can join me and my buddies. We play for fun rather than super competitively. No pressure as long as you can get the ball in the cup in less than 10 hits. We normally score between 35 and 48 for a 9-hole round depending on the day so we're neither good nor absolutely terrible!
Edit to add: At both of the courses I've mentioned, no special golf clothing is required. You can wear shorts or jeans and a t-shirt or short or long-sleeved shirt is fine. If you're going to get one piece of clothing, I recommend golf shoes. If you have a solid grip on the ground, your swing will be better and so every shot you make will be better.
Also, Do not watch Rick Shiels videos on Youtube. You will feel like he's giving you good advice, but you'll end up feeling completely useless. He's only useful if you already know what you're doing.
