David Beckhamto play for Los Angeles for $250 million
Discussion
How can you take the piss of a guy who will be earning $1 million a week!!!!
Jealous...I think so....I know I am.
He is a good football player otherwise he wouldn't be played by both Man U and Real Madrid.
Maybe he isn't as good as he was..he's still better than...I would say all of those on here.
He also spends a lot of time with his kids which I respect for "celebrity", as most have them in their arms for the pics only

We were sat around in a meeting this afternoon and someone mentioned this, and about how the two year/300 odd person project we were in said meeting about, was worth about the same as he has just signed for. It is an outrageous sum, but he will earn way more than that for MLS in the long term. I'd say it is a good move all around. He isn't the great player he was, but people will flock to watch him play. His presence (on the bench ) will help develop the kudos so lacking in MLS. He is in for a fright if he took a look at Galaxy and thought the whole MLS was like that. Can't wait to see him play at the Robertson Stadium here in Houston - its not exactly the Bernabeu! It does have palm trees for corner flags though, which is rather fetching...
Anyway, he will have read how much the cost of living is in the UK these days and will be coming to the US for the cheaper fuel and housing, no doubt.

'One trick Pony?!!!'
Following on from the 'Beckham is sh*t' theory. Admittedly his best days were at Man U. Don't quote me, but per game, has there ever been a more influential player in assists for Man U, or any other team for that matter, against a ratio of how many games he's played. (In total I'm sure Giggsy has assisted more). He may not have had the pace to beat a man consistently, but that is in a human's make up (No not the grooming range) or genetics surely to some degree. But the best crosser, he could tackle, shoot, get into poaching positions etc etc. 1 trick pony, I don't think so, best crosser of the ball ever, probably, but he had many other attributes than just that. Also got England out the SH*t on many occasions don't forget!
Good luck to him, the lucky b*stard!

He's good at deadball situations. Possibly not the best in the world but definatly one of. Or used to be.
To say he tackles though is not true, he's a good winger, no central midfield general. He definatly has the balls for the big occasion & can cope with pressure.
He's a pretty decent prson and a good parent, good luck to him I say too, though I think $250mil is enough whatever.

What a dumb move.
As an American who tried to support Major League Soccer, its pointless.
No one cares here about soccer. I don't think we sold out any of the World Cup games when we hosted it a few years ago.
Glad I'm not writing the check...

By the way, you're writing on a British based website, so we would appreciate the use of the Queen's English please. So that's,
'writing that CHEQUE'.
Much obliged
We fat, stupid 'mericans can't form a proper sentence, punctuate or spell properly in our own English.......
.......so I guess your just sh!t out of luck!...

Come on RoRo, be serious. What about this?
www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXqS7hgsWNE
But absolutely nothing will ever match up to this one from the legendary Frank Worthington
www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlqU-pQMR74
IIRC he only had a few games for England, mainly because of this comment to Ron Greenwood (England manager)
Ron - Frank, if you don`t start playing better, I`m going to pull you off at half time.
Frank - Blimey, we only get half an orange at Leicester
(or something like that)

Dumb? Moving to LA on $250,000,000?
You do remembber what Real madrid said after they bought him? They were willing to oay much much more, because he is a global brand now. Shirt sales in Asia will bring a good chink of that money back.
Why do you think it is dumb?

$250 million USD!!! Bloody hell. Not bad for a one trick kicker, a stupid tattoo on his neck, and a platinum hair rinse.
Obviously you haven't watched him play much then.
Yup, and he's shit.
Funniest thing I've read for weeks.
infact, you've earned two...

I'm not really a footbll fan but from what I see he does play a good game of football. Should he turn down ridiculously lucrative contracts so he looks 'hard' (I just lolled so much at the thought of a football player looking hard I nearly done a wee).
You're joking right?
Beckham is a seriously overrated player. He's pretty much a one trick pony and has only got as far as he has because we don't have many great midfielders in this country. Watch him in any game in open play and he doesn't display the creativity or skill of some of the best continental players. He's just not up there with the best.
I just cannot believe the Kudos he gets. He's a nice guy and a very determined footballer but he is not a *great* player.

having had the opportunityto see beckham play on a number of occassions i would quite happily say he was the best player on he pitch every time. his work rate was immense, chasing back etc, you dont see this on the TV, the ground he covers is phenomenal, he is undoubtedly the best crosser of the ball from the right, his dead ball skills were and still are amongst the top few in the world and he has an excellent ability top read the movements of other players, how many times did he and gary neville link up on the right for man utd? . to say he is shit is to prove you have no knowledge of football and have let the his off pitch activities dictate your feelings.
its not the move i wanted him to make, i had hoped he would come back to the UK, play in the premiership and fight for his england place but under McClaren, that was never likely to happen, thanks steve!?! so he goes to a place where he is wanted, can earn a fortune and will enjoy playing the football, cant say i blame him, this is a country which burnt effigys of him in 1998 and then worshipped him in 2002 against greece?

I just say good luck to the guy.
If he can get 50 million a year for playing a game he loves then so be it.
He is a good player but i wouldn't say great. His creativity is huge, just watch some of those 60 yard balls to the feet of ronaldo at real (but then ronny loses control most times)!
He also has a great work rate, his tackling might not be brilliant but he gets himself into defensive positions and slows play down so the proper defenders can get back and tackle.
I think he is one of only 2 people to complete the bleep test (level 23), can't remember who the other one was but he wasn't a footballer.

I really struggle with this point of view. How do you define a 'great' player?
Sure, he's not the best in the world but he's certainly not far behind. After watching him play for many years at Old Trafford, I can certainly say he is (or at least has been) a great player. One of the best crossers/passers the game has ever seen and certainly one of the best spot kick players too. Although this doesn't make a complete footballer, his specialities more than make up for the other 'average' aspects of his game.
I'm aware that my opinion is biased but its a true belief.
The lad done good.

Oh please! His status is overblown and has been for a while. He is a good player, nothing more. All this talk of dead ball skills and freekicks is a cliche and is not enough to make him a great player. He is simply not as talented on the ball as some other European or South American players. I remember watching the World Cup and it showed me what real midfielders can do. Watching players like the Portugese 'Deco' or the Argentinian 'Messi' was a revelation.

sorry but i disagree, i have seen him play, watching him rather than the game made me realise how much ground he covers on the wing and his ability to be in the right place at the right time, his passing and crossing on that day won the game for England. how can his dead ball skills be a cliche when he has constantly scored from free kicks whilst at man utd and for england? it is not a cliche it is fact. from 25 yards out, i would bet aginst the keeper rather than beckham....
when you play on the right side of midfield what will "on the ball" skills offer you? nothing, good crossing skills, ah yes thats right the ball into the box and at the feet of the striker.
thats why footballers play in different postitions, to take into account their best skills...
i dont think there was one england player who played well in the last world cup, beckham included, but Deco and Messi played very well and i do rate them just as highly as beckham. messi needs to prove it for a few more seasons yet though.... beckham is 31 or thereabouts, making his debut for man utd when he ws 17 or 18, ten years as one of the worlds gretest footballers against the likes of ronaldo, zidane and figo isnt bad.
if you dont like him fine, but to say his talents are over rated is unjustified.
champions league, fa cups, league cups, more premierships than spurs and newcastle et al have ever won first division titles..... his honours list is pretty impressive for an average player....
out of interest who do you support?
