Sorry for Ireland etc but I'm actually hoping that England will bat all the way through until the end of the innings with no declaration. Then see how cheaply they can bowl Ireland out. Apart from a chance to see what sort of nick the whole team is in, and to entertain the crowd who have bought tickets, what a powerful pre-Ashes statement it would be.
There's that old (1930) record team innings to go for if they wish? 729 runs and they are currently 464-2 so at their current run rate, fewer than 50 overs....And Gouchies record 333 could also go if Pope stays?

Agreed, players need time at the crease. A declaration will just shorten the game and take away valuable play time for the batters. Bairstow could do with a bat and I’d have thought it wouldn’t do Stokes any harm either.paulrockliffe said:
Rather than declaring they would be better off making sure more of the batters get a go, get to 50 and then try to hit every ball for 6 so you're out quicker. Something like that.
Replace '50' with 'the crease' and I reckon that's pretty much what this team's been.Yeah, but the bigger picture is they've just given some of the batsmen a couple of days in the field for no benefit and the even bigger picture is I'm off to the T20 in an hour and Stokes might as well have played for Durham tonight!
I suppose now there's an outside chance Stokes plays on Sunday evening.

Yeah, that's what I meant, you'd be raging if you were Bairstow etc not getting a go at this. Even if England bat again, they won't' be getting a go then either.
Yes you must question that logic. Not batted in almost a year, first proper batting will be vs Aussies. pequod said:

Must be an element of not embarrassing them more than they have to.
That's my take on it.A golden opportunity to break records, that have stood for a long time beckoned....

ETA: Oh, of course, the FA Cup Final, the Derby, plus train strikes, and advanced ticket sales for day 3 not worth opening the gates, has probably made a difference? Or not....

What other reason to declare?
I really think they're just trying to play their normal game, declaring when they think they have enough to bowl the opposition without having to bat again, but leaving enough time to do so if required. They could have batted until tea tomorrow and put on 1000 runs with 4 sessions left, but what would be the point? The end result would be the same, but with the added risk that the other team simply digs with no hope of a win, but you've left them tantalisingly close to a potential draw if they can hang on for only 4 sessions. Declaring now with more than 2 days left takes away the hope they can hang on for a draw.
Saying that, I also think there is an unwritten rule in sport to not take the piss and completely annihilate a weaker opponent. Beat them and beat them well, but don't knock seven shades of st out of them when you don't have to. Save that for the Aussies.
