Has anybody had experience of playing in the Mercedes Trophy?

The OH got an email a few weeks ago from Mercedes inviting her to enter the draw, put my name down and got pulled out the hat (to be honest I thought it was a one-off client entertainment day laid on by the dealership; not a full-on global competition!)

Played at St Andrews Dukes in the p1ssing rain with 130 yard visibility.
I play off 22 and finished with an abysmal 20 Stableford points, bailed on the "lunch" and prize giving as it was 1430hrs with 9 other groups still to come in and drove home soaked to Aberdeen.

Got an email from AC the next day congratulating me for winning my category and the next round is to be held at St George's Hill in Surrey with accommodation at MB Brooklands.

That's a team Stableford event with the other category winners from my region. If we win that then we progress through to the National Finals at St Andrews. Win that and its off to Stuttgart next year for the world finals - long way to go though!
That would explain all the Mercedes branding at my local course that's been on display the last few days.

I was wondering what that was all about.

Treated myself to a Ping G400 crossover. 3 iron (19 degrees). Brand new unmarked on eBay, £120.

I can't stand my hybrid anymore, so it's gone.

Tour 85 Stiff shaft, blue dot to match my current irons.

Hoping it's going to be a new 230yard fairway finder...
OK an update on this club.

After a fairly slow start, this thing has become an absolute weapon!!

Off the tee I'm hitting a lovely mid-height slow draw around the 240-250 yard distance. It really does fly!

Haven't used it as much off the deck but have hit a couple of cracking shots into par 5's with it, although this still needs a bit of work.

Has anyone played in Vegas? We're going in Feb for 5 nights and want to squeeze a round in. Will be a four ball, handicaps ranging from 12-25...Any recommendations? I quite fancy Wolf Creek but it's a bit of a drive. We'd be hiring clubs as we don't fancy taking our own all that way for one round....

I didn’t play, but wish I’d taken my clubs. I’ve been to LV for 5 weeks for work on two occasions. Playing golf would have stopped me drinking for a few hours on the weekend!

Wolf Creek looks amazing, if a little nuts. You might have seen it, but Mark Crossfield did a YouTube course vlog there recently which is worth checking out to see how bonkers it is.

If you don’t fancy the drive, TPC Summerlin and TPC Las Vegas are right next to each other on the edge of town. They’re proper tour courses so if you can get on there they should be stunning courses. Not sure on cost though.

Had one of those nearly rounds on Sunday - shot an 82 with a 7 and an 8 on the card, and lipped out 5 or 6 times - including twice on the hole I scored 7, once from 30 feet, then again from the return putt 4 feet away. Was hitting the putts fine, just wasn't getting the breaks.

Then got to the 18th, 155 yard Par 3 that was playing downwind. Pulled my 9 iron, saw it land 6 feet in front of the pin on the fringe, chased up towards the hole and..... Lipped out.

Never had an ace before, so there was much swearing. Sank the putt and made some cash in the 2s comp however, so not all bad. Plus it was the first time I got to use my new 3 wood in anger, had a couple go 290 with a little draw and wind assist.

Only issue is there is now very little point in using my Driver - however rather than taking it out of the bag, I've just ordered a new one smile My club has a demo 917 D3 head which I was hitting well during my 3 wood fitting, just didn't have the right flex shaft for me to try - so they've order me an Aldila Rogue Max 60X to go in it. I have the Rogue Max in my 3 wood and hybrid, and am blown away by the performance. Think I've found my go to shaft smile

I actually watched the Wolf Creek video & fancied it until i saw the cost of a round! $200 before club hire! I'll check the other two out. Cheers!

The price of golf on 'feature' courses in the US is bonkers, I was watching the two lads on Golfholics playing on what came across as a decidedly average Pebble Beach course at $500 a round.

I wonder how much of that $200 goes on water for the course.

It looks incredible, but I can't help thinking the days for that kind of extravagant wastefulness are numbered.

It must cost a fortune.

At our club, we are lucky enough to own several gravel pits which the club draws water from to water the fairways and greens during the summer months.

However, the EA still only let you take a percentage of the water from those gravel pits - once they reach a certain level you have to take water from the tap!

Even then, they only let you take a certain amount.

Last summer the water bill was in the region of £40,000 and they were only watering the tees, greens and surrounds. The fairways looked like this:

And that is in East Sussex. Imagine what it must take to keep a golf course green in a desert?!

That looks like so much fun - you'd only need to hit a 7 iron, it'd all just run!

Yep - it's incredible really, the course varies so much from day to day and season to season depending on wind, etc.

Yep. The water bill must be huge. Though I imagine they do quite well out of events at a few of them. As in when the PGA comes to town, I bet they sell a fortune in Merch & hospitality. Think we’re going to try and play TPC Vegas. $155 a round including club hire in Feb is just about reasonable enough for a one off!

I got an original TM mid-rescue 19*. Hit it similar distance. Absolute weapon even after 15years.

Someone might correct me in this, but I think you also have to stay on the property to play.

I’m not sure I’d pay that kind of money. There’s enough great courses in the world that paying through the nose for one round seems a little daft.

It isn't much different over here though, is it?

Royal St Georges - £225
Wentworth West - £300
Turnberry - £375

Even my club charges £155 a round to non members!

Was at Turnberry last year and paid nowhere near that - had 2 nights in the Trump hotel and 3 rounds for about £300pp

Fair enough - was just going by website advertised green fees. Always deals to be had!

Indeed, wasn’t having a dig smile

We were off-peak season too though which likely helped.

Out of interest, was this booked directly? Or through a third party?

Was your golf travel iirc - we got BA flights on my mates points as he had far too many and a £30 hire car 👍🏼.

Weather wasn’t ideal but the Azelia course was brilliant

The £200 a day in red made it a very spenny long weekend!!!!

Doing Old Head next weekend which should be great!
