Hi everyone
I’ve played golf on and off over the years but have decided to take it more seriously this year and have joined a club close to home.
I’ve always played with a set of Titleist DTR irons that were given to me many years ago. They’re from 1988 to be precise which makes them literally the same age as me!
You get different comments from different people about how iron technology has come along but I can’t help but think an upgrade to something more recent would help my game. I currently play off 18.
What do you think?
£120 on some secondhand Mizuno JPX or G-Series Pings with the right shafts and approximately the right colour dot will see you right.I’ve played golf on and off over the years but have decided to take it more seriously this year and have joined a club close to home.

Played in a 4 balls match amongst a load of mates yesterday - such a tight game! Flicking between one or 2 up and one or 2 down for the whole of the match!
Coming on the 15th all square I manage (somehow) to crack a 362 yard drive, dead straight down this 405 yard par 4, leaving just a tiny flick on. Pitch it to about 10 ft and 3-putt...my 7th 3-putt of the round...we then go and lose the next hole too leaving us 2 down on the 17th tee.
From here I somehow manage to birdie the SI 3 17th to win the hole leaving us 1 down on the tee of the 18th, another 405 yd par-4 where you have to approach the green in front of the clubhouse over a lake. I’m left with 118yards in, from the semi on the left, directly over the lake. One of the guys we were playing had driven to about 60 yards away, in the centre of the fairway, taking the lake out of play a bit. Manage to hit a PW to literally a foot and make the tap-in birdie as they make a par - a very enjoyable halved game!
Many beers were had (standing outside) the clubhouse afterwards!

Got my first round lined up for (yes this year), with my brother at Sene Valley next weekend, then bring back to my course Princes on the 28th..(with 10 others, it’s popular).
I have literally not had a swing in 7 months, a proper swing in perhaps 10 months.
Sold my (New/modern) irons in the winter.. so have got my old proper bladed set out (20yrs+ old), loft and lied to old specs & new grips on this morning..
Can’t wait...

Sounds good to me - is there anywhere I should be looking other than Golf Bidder and eBay?Scroll back a few pages and the chart is in this thread.

362 is one hell of a smash whatever the conditions - I've been over 350 a couple of times in my life, mostly thanks to baked fairways and a helpful wind - great feeling isn't it
Biggest hit I've had this season in similar conditions was 285, but that was with a 19 degree Hybrid.
My usual golf buddies were too chicken to brave the rain yesterday, so I went out for a few solo holes. Actually really enjoyed it in between sheltering from downpours, and a few holes turned into a full 18. Ended up going round in 78, and was 3 under for the 5 Par 5's on the course I was playing, with birdie putts that just lipped on the other two. Was absolutely puring my irons - best one was on the 5th. Par 5, left myself with about 200 yards left to go a little downwind and knocked a 5 iron to 12 feet away, lipping out for eagle. Just need some comps to start now (July apparently).
I've also jsut dropped down to 3 wedges rather than 4 so I can put a 3 iron in - now go PW, 52, 58. Took a bit of getting used to - especially longer bunker shots where I used to get my 54 degree wedge out, but I'm getting the hang of using the 52 instead. Now I'm used to it I'm loving the simplicity round the greens. Long chip and runs with the PW, lobs with the 58 and everything else with the 52.
Must admit one part of the "new normal" I'm struggling a little bit with is not removing the pin. Even with the new rules I always took it out, especially on 5 footers and below as it was far too off-putting.
That and the bar being shut

Totally agree on this, especially when the flag isn't 100% straight - had a few occasions where the put has been dead centre in the hole, its hit it (at a perfectly reasonable pace) and bounced out - we've always said amongst our group that in those circumstances its gone in.That and the bar being shut
The bar is another one - my club has got a caravan next to the 18th serving pints, all the others have opened the bar but don't let you drink inside - have to have the drinks standing on the terrace, lazing on the grass instead.

The course I played yesterday had the little plastic attachments on the bottom of the pin - so a full size hole, then you lift up the plastic attachment with your putter and the ball pops out. My other course just has half height holes, which are less good. For me though it's just reminding myself that I'm not going to hit the pin with my putter on the follow through - 30 year old habits are tough to break The bar is another one - my club has got a caravan next to the 18th serving pints, all the others have opened the bar but don't let you drink inside - have to have the drinks standing on the terrace, lazing on the grass instead.
OTOH I do love the new approach to bunkers. Now proper hazards, albeit with preferred lies if you end up in a footprint. Speeds the game up beautifully as well.

Joining a golf club before being able to hit the ball at every attempt is:
I should have taken this advice. - Expensive
- Risky
- A very inefficient way to learn
- Going to make you unpopular with the members. Swing-and-a-miss is pretty unedifying on a busy first tee!
Recently I signed up using the online system and someone added themselves to play with me. To say they were unimpressed is an understatement. In the end they even implied that my attocious play was lowering their standards when they started topping the ball and fluffing his shots. I think I lost about 10 balls and ended up giving up on some holes. I did get 2 pars though! One was a 170 yard par 3 which means I must have some talent. So I'm not giving up - yet.
I have ordered a book on Amazon that is highly rated called the 5 lessons the modern fundamentals of golf. And will read it before I go back again. The bloke did give me some advice about putting and I got better at that. If the book doesn't help I will get some lessons. I don't think it helps that I joined a fancy club which is only affordable because of my age and an offer. My car doesn't exactly blend with others in the car park. I'm starting to think it was a bad idea.

The 5 lessons book is great, I learnt a lot from reading it... after i'd been playing for a while. It really helped me with getting my grip back to something decent and thinking about my setup / approach to playing.
But... if you've never hit a golf ball, going out on a decent course and putting yourself off the game isn't a good idea. See the pro at your course, if its a nice course as you imply it should have some decent training facilities and he should be able to give you some decent pointers on getting comfortable.
You can probably buy a package of lessons for sub £200 that'll help no end.
Hi all
So a couple of weeks back i asked about a set of clubs and you recommended some pings for the taller gentleman. I did have a look but in the end settled for a wilson set +1”
I’ve dabbled in golf for many years (badly) and last played on a course about 10 years ago so paid for some lessons which were an eye opener.
I have had 2 and some range practice so yesterday made my long awaited return to the course with all the gear and no idea.
I played a 4 ball with 2 that are good and another new chap. I even managed a par and got much better as I loosened up even managing to win a hole.
Looking forward to my next outing.
