2hr6.. Good effort mate.

I got 2hr34, really annoyed cus did 2hr14 last year.
Cheers! Miles 9,11 and 12 were incredibly tough mentally - completely blanked my girlfriend who was only a foot away cheering me on in the crowd (oops) when I ran past.

A friend of mine also suffered in the heat, going from a half marathon PB of 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours and 8 minutes. She's particularly annoyed because the guy carrying that huge aerial thing on his shoulders beat her!

Bath Half yesterday in a high 1hr 23. Was hoping for sub 1:20 and was on course until ~8 miles after which I fell apart. Not too disappointed though as it was my first half, and had only raced up to 10k beforehand.
Time to start piling on some speed now for the track season.
Well done. The last 3.x miles from the turn to the finish are hard work on that course. On the first lap I was supporting just after the Lucozade station after the turn (bloke in cargo shorts and a black fleece standing on the verge on the right) so probably saw you then as a few of my friends/clubmates were around the 80min pace.

I did silverstone in 1.36.04, I wanted to go faster but between nine and eleven I just had nothing - I'm not good when its warm.

I also very nearly missed the start due to me getting up late and the traffic - thanks to the nice marshal that found me a parking space right by the entrance!!

Nice, it's the first large road race I've done and the support is brilliant. I'd planned to push on from the turn as our regular tempo run route is the loop from windsor bridge to the turn and I typically feel good down from the turn, but it was a bit different on sunday! That last mile is horrible as well, it just climbs ever so slightly. Ran a 7.05 last mile after being sub 6 for the first couple!
Sorry but I didn't spot you, I only really managed to pick out my parents cheering on. I was in a university vest (blue with yellow details) and white compression socks, but one of them had rolled down after the first mile.

In that case I definitely saw you as I was cheering on every TeamBath AC or BathUni vest I saw hehethumbup

The last mile along Pulteney Road to the Bathwick Hill roundabout is a real drag. I've run sub-68 twice on that course and both times it has been very tough on what looks like it should be fine.

well, the buttons on my garmin 205 are fked....especially the up arrow on the right, which won't work at all any more. i was thinking about buying another 205 as the newest 610 doesn't have the breadcrumb map (how silly!) and the newest latest and greatest with the map (the 910xt) is north of £300. amazon have a new 205 for £90.

anyway, decided to phone garmin.....they said £47, send mine back and they'll send me an "as new" fully reconditioned unit biggrin result biggrin

Awesome, yeah I'm sure it's not normally that uphill hehe
Sub 68 yikes I can't comprehend that kind of speed over a half!

absurdly quick isn't it. cookie118 - you're a very, very similar pace to me. my friend kelly ran a 1:24 at bath 1/2 and i'm marginally quicker than her. the further the distance she pulls ahead, the lesser i'm quicker (i'm over 1 minute faster over 8 miles than her) but 1/2 it's still about the same, any more and she'll reel me in until 15 or so when she'll be ahead of me....she's pretty quick for a woman!

It is! One of the guys from uni did 68.xx this year and he went through 10k in 32mins, I'd be ecstatic with that straight off! I'd even be happy with a 16min 5k!
What you say about your friend makes sense, apparently women don't have the power to weight ratio to compete directly over the shorter distances, but as the distance and toughness goes up the gap gets shorter. There's a good piece on the subject in feet in the clouds, about Helen Diamantes who won an overall (several stage fell) as part of a pair.
I'll be looking to shed some of the distance now and begin gaining speed as I'm aiming to be doing 800m by July (coming down gradually through 5k-3k-1500m). It's fair to say I'm more at home on the red stuff than the roads or cross.

no, it's just does she does marathon training hehe it is true, to a certain extent, females are more suited to longer distances, but even the 100km run records show males still well, well in front.

i've come the other way, i used to be a track runner (800m mainly, but 1500m also with the odd 400 or 3k) but prefer more endurance training but i've still got the speed which helps for the 5k/10k.

it's odd, run in a race and find myself very tired and around people of similar ability, 95+% of the time come the last 100-200m i'll outsprint them....no matter how shot my legs are.

i'm aiming for a sub 37 10k this year, though should do that without too much hassle on a nice course.

I know the feeling, when I first moved up to seniors I was doing virtually no mileage and couldn't keep pace with most of the guys throughout the 10k races, but I could always pull out a good last quarter mile. My ability to pull out such a big sprint in comparison to the previous pace has gone down with mileage, but
I still managed to get ~6 guys in the last 300m of the BUCS xc this year, which was nice smile.

What were your times on the track? I'm 2.02 for 800m and 4.19 for 1500m, but those have stood since 2009 and 2008 so they're up for revision. Aim for this year is sub 2 (at the very least) and as close to 4 as I can get.

2:00.2 for 800 (you have no idea how annoying this was!), my next race was 2:02.i then had a falling out with my coach and haven't done an 800 since. 1500 pb is 4:24. Not done either for a few years now and probably won't again to be honest.

Similar here - I usually drop a few people in the last 1/4 mile, especially of the finish is uphill.

I'm signed up for an 11 mile coast race in August and a 10k in three weeks. Will do a couple of tris and maybe one or two other 10k races, Might do a 5k too although I need to calm down a bit; I was spent by 3km on the one I did last year having got my pace wrong! The last km was all uphill and killed me. 18m03 was just about okay (hilly course, some light off road) for a first 5km (and only!) race.

A good reason for even marathon runners to do some speed work and maybe some 100m sprints at the end of a session.

another(!!!!) hill session for me tonight. ran to training, then a warm up, 30mins of hills continuously, hard up, slow down, run back to club, then back home.

no garmin watch today (which proved really annoying....is that sad? hehe) as it's being sent off for replacement after 6 years of faithful service. but i know it's 1.5 miles each way to training and it worked out the session was about 10.5 miles, give or take; not bad for a tuesday. steady 5 miles tomorrow, hard session thursday, rest friday, hard saturday, long steady sunday.

that's my plan for the week. i wish there were more club nights other than just tuesday and thursday frown a few meet up for sunday runs but are all doing 20+ miles for london now and i'm not marathon training so don't need to do those sort of miles frown

Had a good 6.5k run last night, furthest I've done since about june so well happy with that. Found a training partner who's a similar ability so was good to run with him, had a cracking build of speed for the last 500 meteres which ended in a sprint finish!

Doing parkrun saturday for the first time in a month so hoping for some improvement, looking at the possibility of starting up a local one as only get to do it when visiting the parents.

Over the last 6 months, my marathon training has been a bit variable! Started out okay, slowly building up miles to a weekly long run of 22 miles. Then, I was hit by achilles tendonitis and had to somehow balance rehabilitation and training! Thankfully, I seem to have managed to do this but, was then hit by extremely bad shin splints which put me out for another week.

Have started training again this week and today was my first run (of 7.5 miles) where I managed a good pace and nothing seemed to hurt! On the physio's instruction, I'll be resting now until Sunday's long run and will hopefully then be back to normal training by next week.

My physio has been brilliant! Telling me off when I did too much and encouraging me when I needed to train. She has got me through these injuries and if I make it to the start line in good health, it will be largely down to her!

Reading half in 2 weeks and then only 3 weeks until London! Starting to get slightly nervous and excited now. When I agreed to run it, 22nd April felt like it may never arrive!!

Will I ever train for/run another marathon?! I'll let you know on April 23rd!! wink

A reasonably rapid 8 miles in 55:20 this morning to get my usual views over Barcelona. Coming back after injury is rubbish.

Reading Half is a good race. I like the crowd support for the first 10 miles and then the long road to the stadium, the quick detour and then the crowd going mad when you enter the stadium
