Well I guess the answer is done as to whether she'll make the top-20 in the WTA rankings - live rankings has her in number 20 now.

https://live-tennis.eu/en/wta-live-ranking

But most of the top 100 or so players in the world are at Indian Wells competing alongside and against her there so she'll have to make at least the last 16 to stay top 20.

Ladies draw. Where's the logic in having byes for all the seeds in R1?

Isn’t that how a seeded draw works? Highest seeds get the privilege of a bye if necessary. Better question is why are all the slots in the draw filled - or maybe that’s your question wink

Yes, why is it necessary? Players would kill to play here.

Surely not; the rest will be losing ranking points from last year - she can only gain them.

I did say, most of the rest are also competing at Indian Wells too so will be gaining points alongside her.

Anyhow, I think* ER could find this event considerably tougher than the US Open as, including qualifying, she gradually played better and better opponents until she got to the quarter finals which gradually improved ER's gameplay. At this contest she might have a relatively easy first round but then I think she could well play Simona Halep in her second match which she might find tough unless she finds a very good hitting partner to practise with. Also remember she is now without a dedicated coach.

*what do I know really - I watched every single game of her in the US Open and was mostly amazed when she won them - the only game I thought she had a better than average chance of winning was the final silly

Given what happened at Wimbledon I also think it was great for her to have to play the qualifying rounds. She also seemed to be on the outside courts when she started playing in the tournament itself, as far as I could see from the highlights. The combination of those two factors meant she had six or so wins under her belt before the pressure was on again.

She might end up wining Indian Wells as well, but many players have a fallow period after their first big win, so expectations shouldn't be too high.

That's going to be the big problem.....UK media frenzy will create massive expectation.

Yes but other players may well have points to 'defend' but ER doesn't - yet... Next year will be a whole different thing, well from Nottingham or Wimbledon onwards.

Emma Raducanu’s first match at Indian Wells 2021 will be on Friday, October 8. She received a bye into the second round after she got the wildcard. Before that, she was due to take part in the qualifying but instead she got time to prepare herself.

Who will Emma Raducanu face at Indian Wells?
The 18-year-old’s first match will be against world No 71 Maria Camila Osorio from Colombia or Aliaksandra Sasnovich, the Belarusian world No 100. If she advances, she then will play against Grand Slam champion and former world No 1 Simona Halep in the third round.

I think you've missed my point.
Everyone else is defending points from last year. If ER goes out in her first match she'll still gain 35 ranking points, and may well be ranked higher than she is today.

You've finally got it. There may be an odd player here or there who didn't play last time but they will be the exceptions.
She's not going to do anything other than climb the rankings for the next few months, because her points total will only increase. Once she's done a full year on the circuit that won't be the case.
The woman directly above her in the WTA rankings - Bianca Andreescu - is the defending champion (from 2019, but those points still count due to covid). Even if she wins again this time she'll be below ER if ER picks up points for losing her first match.

Looks like it will be a while before Emma employs a longterm coach..
This is quite a mature approach to me.. Slowing things down a bit after her lightspeed success... so far..!
