The PH Gun Cabinet - Shooting Matters
Discussion
Only Shooting three days this season
First was Upperwood, very good day in 40mph winds James did well to show the birds over us.
Really high and fast.
Second is mid Nov at Cefngwyn Hall In Wales under Ducks
Last is a small day in Wales in Jan under some very high Pheasant
That will do for me.
Its my fifth season and my first was 25 days have cut back ever since looking for challenges rather than quantity.

Did a walked up day last week, not great truth be told.
Planning on doing 2 other 200 bird driven days this season, might have to wait until January now though.
Just got email from Guns On Pegs pimping a £33/bird in Wales...fsck that!
Edit to add: I'm a 525 Sporter shooter myself as well. Thought I would be walking out with a Beretta SP but the 525 mounted higher and just felt better. I used to entertain the idea of treating myself to a Perazzi at some point but tbh I'd just be wasting my money. I miss the birds because of me, not the gun!

'Scuse my ignorance but with pheasant shoots etc does a 200 bird day relate to a guaranteed bag or minimum, how does that work?Planning on doing 2 other 200 bird driven days this season, might have to wait until January now though.

Similar with £33 a bird is that what you pay for every bird downed.?
Only done a cheap rough shoot with pheasant at a set price for the day you see. Usually shoot pigeon over crops.
Yep so 200 x going rate, then cost per gun is divide that by number of guns. So for example 200 birds at £40 each is £8k then divide it by the number of guns.
£33 is not too bad, about the going rate IMHO.
There are other costs too, you normally need to account for at least 10% for gratuity and sometimes you pay extra for refreshments sometimes its included.
I am far from an expert though, don't really do game shooting any more been a long time so I am sure someoene with more up to date knowledge will correct me if its not quite right.

I see the govt have admitted they confused the military grade .50 cal rifles with what civvies have and shoot. They are now considering allowing the owners of .50 cal to keep their rifles. Will probably come with extra security requirements.
No word on MARS etal which I guess means they are going to move forward with the ban on those.

The NCA who have a clear agenda and who pushed for this knew exactly what they were doing, knowing that ministers wouldn't question their advice, or know the difference......Pesty said:
Got to admit I’m confused too.
What’s the difference between a millitary .50 bolt action sniper rifle and a civilian bolt action sporting rifle?
I can only imagine the projectiles armour piercing/ incendiary etc.
That's been the issue all along isn't it?What’s the difference between a millitary .50 bolt action sniper rifle and a civilian bolt action sporting rifle?

A proposal to ban civilian use of some thing that they've actually never had access to anyway, which is the Sect5 ammo.
Apparently, the problem is that NABIS have been telling anyone who will listen that if someone stole a .50 rifle and climbed to the top of Nelson's Column, they could hit the PM as she stepped out of No.10 in Downing Street and there's nothing anyone would be able to do about it.
Fantasyland doesn't even come anywhere close.

Had my first lesson Friday with Brett at North Wales shooting school.
Used an old Browning 325, as it was the only one they had with a larger stock (and used).
Great fun, reckon I was hitting 70% if I deducted that bloody fast, jumping, bouncing Rabbit clay at the end.
Off again in a few weeks when I am free, trying out a Beretta with an extended stock 15”) and a 525 / 725 depending on what’s in / used.
Can’t wait to go again!

Listen. Do as you're told. Wear suitable clothing. Have a good time
Don't take a st dog
Dog is staying at home for this first one whilst I learn the ropes. Don't take a st dog
I already had some Seeland trousers which I think will work well for this. They said to bring a stick. Now I have seen beaters holding sticks, but not really paid attention to what they do with it. What kind of stick is best and whats it used for?
Beating stick lots of uses.
Tapping things to make a noise and whacking bushes to flush birds. Also a bit of a balance aid on difficult terrain. Test depth of streams. Hold up wire while you duck under it. Administer coup de grace to pricked birds. Use as tethering point for excited spaniel.
If you find yourself a 4-5 ft section of straight ash, birch or hazel and cut that you'll be OK - no need for anything fancy
A lot of beaters dogs are very unruly which might OK on some informal shoots and part of the fun but you don't want the mutt running riot on the first day especially if it's a bit more formal or commercial shoot. Probably best getting the feel of the place and being honest with yourself about whether you can control your dog before taking it. Ideally needs to be able to stop on whistle reliably and work close to you. Letting the dog work or watching dogs work is a big part of the fun
