No way did Ward win that - granted he did come on strong in the 2nd half but it seemed like too little too late.
There were a lot of rounds where it could have gone either way, but I awarded them to Ward for generally being more accurate and landing better shots. Here's my scoring:Kovalev - Ward
10-9
10-8
10-9
9-10
9-10
9-10
9-10
9-10
9-10
10-9
9-10
10-10
Kovalev 113
Ward 115
(Maths failed me on the previous page!)
Round 4 could have easily been given to Kovalev, in which case it would be a draw. However I really couldn't separate them in round 12, whereas the judges probably did.
such a subjective fight.....if you flip and give 4th and 5th to kovalev( i think the majority of obsevers did) you've suddenly got a 115-112 in favour of kovalev!....a hair's breadth
i've watched it back again and noticed more cute work from ward making my card now 114-113 in favour of kovalev......so close....
if it wasn't a title affair there would be less uproar i think....certainly not a robbery....but ward didn't do enough to take the man's belts for me.....nobody looked more surprised at the result than andre himself..
for me, the rematch will be a wide ud for ward as he seemed to learn kovalev more and more as the fight progressed....kovalev seemed to lose his way a little bit down the stretch.
his usual ring cutting and distance closing waned a lot from the 7th i noticed.

This highlights for me one small aspect of boxing (amongst many, I will concede) that I really don't get. After the final bell went, Ward seemed fine; congratulated Kovalev and his corner and overall seemed to give an air of someone who was reasonably happy with the evening's events. About 10-20 seconds before the announcement, though, he was doing a reasonable impression of someone with the hump...only to be pleasantly surprised when the scorecards were officially announced. To me, it was clear; someone had given the Ward camp the tip that the cards had gone against them, erroneously as it transpired. Why do that??? Why is there so often a melee around the judges of people trying to get a sneaky peek at the cards so they can let their fighter know something that he's going to be told IN 30 SECONDS' TIME anyway!!! Daft if you ask me...Oooh good topic! Worst boxing decisions you've seen...
Two of my favourites (not that 'favourite' would be the right word) involved the same fighter, John McDermott, and poor bugger was on the wrong end of both! First was against Danny Williams. Going into the last two rounds of the fight I had McDermott ahead...then Williams gets deducted a point for repeated low blows...and then gets deducted another for hitting on the break...and then gets deducted yet another for spitting out his gumshield, and he STILL gets the majority decision!!!
The second was against Tyson Fury and was such a travesty that when the score was announced in Fury's favour (and it wasn't even close...98-92!!!), you hear Jim Watt asking his co-commentator incredulously 'Has he got the names mixed up?!?!', then McDermott in the post fight interview utterly crushed asking 'Why does this keep happening to me??? I'm a nice guy...!'
Still, a couple of years later I met McDermott at a Prizefighter and got to shake his hand and tell him that I thought they were two of the crappiest decision I'd ever seen...which I'm sure made everything feel much better for him!

Worst decisions I can recall recently:
Chisora losing to Helenius, the scorecards were all over the place with two judges seeing the fight 115-113 to Helenius which was enough to give him the SD.
Valuev out pointing a well past his best Holyfield back in 2008.
For whatever reason those are the two fights that stick in my mind the most.

Definitely...Chisora-Helenius was terrible. To be honest, I'd completely forgotten about the Reid one; which is ironic because it's one of the most cited examples for why Germany has the reputation for being a ridiculously tough place for the 'away' fighter to get a decision.
Just thought of another recent stinker...Ricky Burns vs Ray Beltran. Eddie Hearn even went into Beltran's changing room afterwards to apologise for that one!

^What a pecker, but I doubt Lucas Browne is the only one of this new crop of heavyweight competition who's going to get popped.
Shannon Briggs is on the Joe Rogan Podcast, really interesting listen...

Spot on there, this coming a week after Stiverne failed a test ahead of his fight with Povetkin...http://www.espn.co.uk/boxing/story/_/id/18050121/b...
i think we will see more and more of it.
The supplements market is thriving, labels are misleading with drugs having multiple names its easy to see how someone who thought they were clean would take something unknowingly. Everyone is looking for that little edge and its so easy these days to buy things online and have them shipped in bypassing any government or sporting body testing.

Good interview with Kevin Mitchell; happily it sounds like he's found some stability now and seems in a better place in retirement than for much of his fighting career.

always loved mitchell, i remember following his career on the way up when he was a pup, he fought up here a bit.......can't remember who he fought but saw him on a show at the olympia about 10-12 years ago..
he's certainly given his fair share to british boxing and i'm glad to see he's got himself back on track....
when i met him at milton keynes (fk off you two!!!!) he was such a lovely fella...must have spent a good ten/fifteen minutes talking about the game with him...
