A question for the more experienced players.
Are specialist wedges worth getting over the ones that come with a set of irons, say 5i-SW? My TM Speedblades include PW, AW and SW but none of these have any kind of milling you see on dedicated wedges. I seem to get little or no check or spin with these (it's probably me).
If so where's the happy crossover, especially around the PW loft? Iron set or wedge?
I personally think Wedges are more important for most players than their Driver, Are specialist wedges worth getting over the ones that come with a set of irons, say 5i-SW? I like to think that my wedge play is better than my handicap and that's because I probably practice wedge shots more than I do the driver and while I do fluff the odd chip with a wedge, I am pretty confident getting the club under / through the ball from most lies. And there's something satisfying about flying one over a bunker and onto the green.
I keep my PW (48) from my irons and carry 3 Vokeys. A 52, 58 and 60 (7,8,9 deg bounce). I've dropped my 3 iron (which was a club that I should almost never hit anyway).
Mental thoughts for me on my wedges are around committing to the shot (don't hold back on the follow through and get my hands through the shot into a good finishing position). If I do thin one it is most often because I quit on the shot so you have to learn to commit.
Plus having a 60 wedge means that I can practice flop shots with a plastic practice ball in the back garden....

A lot is in the shaft, as part of the fitting a few weeks back I asked them to fit me for a shaft for my current head - worked a treat
Agreed, I used to have a few issues with balooning and high spin with my woods - swapped from Stiff to Extra Stiff shafts and things improved immeasurably. danneth said:
That does look rather nice. After a disastrous 100 at the weekend which wasn't helped by the 4h 47m it took to play 18 holes I went for another round yesterday evening and discovered that at 4:30 p.m. the course was empty. Shot a 92 which was a big improvement considering that the already rock hard greens were sanded in the morning so I think I'd shoot high 80's with decent greens. The round took 2h 23m and I only caught up with the group in front after 16 holes, not having to wait makes such a difference.

Spot on. A couple of things from me. Played with a blade putter all my golfing life and struggled to get to the hole, went to a Ray Cook mallet this year and I'm holing everything from 5ft. Easier to line up, for me, and more weight to make sure the ball gets there.
Other thing is my naivety believing Callaway clubs would be made in America, wouldn't have changed my choice but surprised most clubs are Chinese made.

I've noticed similar since moving to my TM Ardmore 3 putter - it isn't a full mallet but more a "Fang" style, but so much easier to keep on line on short putts than my previous #9 style. Still getting used to the feel on longer putts, but our small greens its an absolute weapon. And yes most manufacturers these days build everything in China except Srixon unless you go to one of the boutique manufacturers (Miura, Epon, Vega etc) which are all still forged in Japan. Makes little difference to how the club performs, can just make them more challenging to get hold of in a pandemic. I remember I had similar issues with my Driver at the end of last year, Project X were struggling to get shafts out the door which was causing issues.
Lovely new video on YouTube just been posted all about my home club, Rye. Worth a watch!

Of all the Cinque Port clubs, Ryes the most challenging for me, its brutal when the wind picks up, the wind is reversed down here at the moment (SW normal, NE current), makes the hole play plenty different..

Ha, no I'm afraid I'm not teeing off until after lunch. Doubt the clubhouse is open anyway, Rye is closed inside until the 17th May due to national restrictions.I hope your booked in for Lunch at RSG Rosscow!
