England cricket 2023 & 2024
Discussion
Having watched Somerset’s T20 masterclass last night, I’m now struggling with Eng’s abject performance.
Not bad players but woeful decision making. How anyone expected a different result with largely the same players and mindset must be the definition of madness. The failure is led by the senior players, the poor example they set in decision making and shot selection is corrosive.
And well though Broad and Anderson bowled, have we really not grown any subsequent quality bowlers in the 15 years that a 35 and 39 year olds have been on the scene. Or is the injury list indicative of an instructional failure of coaching and development.

When a country of 5m can be world test champions, you'd think a country of 45+m (I'm guessing) could produce some quality bowlers in the last 20 odd years if that is the case.
You would but the metric of population vs output is skewed by cricket being very much a niche sport in England and Wales. Compare and contrast with Australia, India, New Zealand or South Africa. Another issue is that many of our very best players specialise in limited overs cricket and some of those won’t even play Test cricket. Cricket is now becoming more popular and is increasingly being taught in schools again but it will take years to see an real benefit for the national team.

Is anyone actually surprised? I'm not. As soon as I saw how many we needed I knew instantly that we wouldn't even get close.
One of the issues, for me, is the Eng set up. They steal players from the Counties to put in the Eng Squad. Then many sit on the sideline for game after game. Therefore these up and coming players get no game time for their Country but worse, get no game time for their County as well. The most promising players miss huge amounts of the season.Look at Leach in Australia for the Ashes. Almost no time on the pitch in the whole Series and gets battered in the game he plays. But look at the cricket he was actually allowed to play in the season prior for either club or Country. Hardly likely to get better.

But even to my uneducated eye, Stokes is playing very fast and loose is he not?
Like a man with nothing to lose. Surely it would make more sense to feel your way in? He's either going to be a hero or a zero.
Have to score to win, no point hanging in blocking, Stokes is better when he attacks.Like a man with nothing to lose. Surely it would make more sense to feel your way in? He's either going to be a hero or a zero.
