it shames me to ask....but what do people wear for running during winter? since last winter i've lost a few lbs (possibly 1/2 stone!) and already noticing i feel the cold more. i reckon i'd be fine to 0-5deg in shorts and tshirt but anything below that i think it's being stupid.
anyone use....lycra? do they keep your legs warm? what about tops? any website links?
thanks in advance

Not quite in the depths of winter yet but the past couple of days have been friging cold. I have been wearing a base layer and a long sleeve top, shorts. I don't find my legs feeling cold at all once I am moving- I have a lot of fat to insulate me though! Hands get cold so a pair of thing gloves helps.anyone use....lycra? do they keep your legs warm? what about tops? any website links?

I have been buying Karrimor stuff from ebay and amazon. Very cheap, long sleeve top £6, gloves couple of quid, jacket £15.

Sportsshoes.com take some beating. I've been buying shoes & clothing from them for a couple of years. Even changed a pair of trainers after a couple if months that creaked! No questions asked..
yup, ordered several shoes from them in the past, just wanted to know what sort of clothing you guys wear when it's rather chilly out!!cheers
I tend to wear some Nike DriFit tights like this and have been fine down to about -20C (running shorts underneath).
On top a long-sleeved top with a short sleeved over the top if really cold (plus hat and gloves).
I find wind/waterproof stuff means I get so sweaty it isn't worth it. Two layers on top has been fine.

So far long sleeve top and shorts. When colder probably two layers and tights.
Tried a tempo run this morning and it hurt - out of breath the whole time. Only shaved my short run ( between 5.1 and 5.5k) by just over a minute. I must try harder!
when doing anything tempo based i do AT LEAST 1.5 miles warm up and at least 1 mile warm down....makes a huge difference for me. depending how early your morning run was...i don't work well in the morning....i've never done a speed session before 9:30-9:45 or so as i just don't work. i can do steady runs though but still never feel as good as i do at 7pm or so!Tried a tempo run this morning and it hurt - out of breath the whole time. 6.20 am today
You are right on the warm up - felt like I went too quick too soon and suffered. Still, just looked at some times from when I started running outside and my time has improved by 8 minutes which I am quite pleased with against my slowest time.
How does it work in a 5k race though?

My turn for a dumb question. -not having raced. If it is better to warm up when training what about when racing - is it it the same?
for a 5k race this is what i do....
1.5-2 miles warm up (for me around 7:45/mile), then drills (3 sets of each...heel flicks, high knees etc etc....about 5 different ones) and then 3 lots of "strides". strides are around 70-80m of quicker than race pace running with a walk back before doing the next one. all that gets you're muscles used to being stretched/using longer strides which jogging slowly doesn't.
then is the race.
then i'll do 1-2 miles warm down.
Ross.
I have a Nike Dri Fit jacket which I've been wearing for the last week or so. It's fine for light showers but during Sunday's long run, it became quite heavy whilst wet so it's not ideal for faster paced runs but I find more water resistant jackets just trap the sweat you generate since what can't come in also can't get out.
Can't bring myself to wearing running tights so I brave it out in longer shorts.

Thanks chaps ill pop into my local running shop this weekend and see what I can find. I don't like buying online unless I've tried before because sizes seem to vary so much. I've never worn lycra before but reckon for the December/january morning runs ill bloody need it!
Just did 4.5 miles steady this morning.
edit - plus i'm not so self-conscious at that time in the morning as no-one will see me

Helly Hansen base layer, usually with a vest on top (don't know why, I just like wearing a vest when I run).
I can take wearing shorts down to almost freezing (carrying a little more insulation you see), but if it gets really cold this winter, I've a pair of old skool Ron Hill tracksters I intend to break out.
Tuesday's session of 16x90 second efforts was done in the midst of a massive downpour with horizontal rain and hail. The t-shirt I was wearing on top of my vest got so wet it became about 3lbs heavier and stretched down beyond my shorts - looked like I was running in a dress.

So, did anyone else get into London?
My 5th year of trying and I get a place, but I've entered Brighton for next year on the assumption I wouldn't get into London. So a deferral of one will be requested!
Any general advice on training / opinions on whether a sub 3.15 is doable by April next year? I'm currently around a 1 hr 40 minute half pace in training, but have been doing triathlon for the last couple of years so haven't run a marathon distance for a while.
I did a half ironman a few weeks ago (5 hr 15 mins), and ran a hilly half 2 weeks ago in sub 2 (top 10% of field), and I'm doing a very hilly offroad 24km this weekend which I would hope to come in sub 2.30.
In other words, I don't really do road running!

1 word for you mate..... BORING! I HATE treadmills with a passion. Find some hills and some countryside!
When I run in the countryside I can’t help but take my camera and I get distracted, treadmill no distractions!
