Getting close to the cross country season now, north staffs league on saturday and then gwent league next Saturday. Looking forward to it but nervous about a little bit of lost training.

Ewen, how do you find the Cotswold way for training? I've done it once and it was horrendous (raced day before and ran with a girl who has done 4:20 for 1500m who was flying) and we climbed for what felt like a vertical mile before reaching the top, is there anyway of breaking this up?

Can we please ban the word treadmill from this thread because it has nothing to do with running.
Sniffy!

Not quite what I thought when I joined this thread..

welcome wavey

we're all friendly here, with a big variety of speed and ability...but as long as you run you're always welcome biggrin

feel free to ask any of us for any advice/hints/tips etc and we'll all do our best to help you out smile

Ross.
I use a treadmill to help myself train to run better/faster etc as it works for me. Despite my jesty posts I actually do also run outside and plan to do arranged 5k/10k runs in the not to distant future.

To be fair though when I had a treadmill of my own it had nowt to do with running, made an excellent clothes drier though.
Sorry Stiglet, that may have come across differently to how I intended it to sound, I was only messing smile

If you like running on a treadmill that's cool but for me there's nothing like running in the fresh air.

Welcome to the thread wavey

wavey No worries, and well when I feel a bit more confident in my running I am sure I will feel very much the same.

Long time lurker on this thread. Some quick running on the go.

I do a lot of treadmill miles. Anybody got some good interval programs to keep the boredom at bay. Did some 400m/600m x 4 reps at 16.5km's an hour with same distance recovery at a speed of 13km's an hour.

Last night was a quick 10k (for me) in 42:30. Legs feel tight this morning.

i don't need a drink if going for <90mins...but if going for >90mins, i'll take fluid on before i hit the 90mins mark if that makes sense.
This is what I do in "winter" training, but in the summer I find I need water sooner. The more experienced I get, the less I rely on it though.

I also re-read "Brain Training for Runners" the other week where they advocate rinsing ths mouth (not even swallowing) with carb or 4:1 drinks even for shorter distances like 20k. I've started taking a small bottle (250ml) of High5 Energy Source with me to sip on medium runs (e.g. 18km this morning) and so far I don't see any ill effects smile Then I use a recovery drink afterwards.

Was meant to have a rest day today but had a very bad day at work yesterday so went out for an easy 4 miles to burn off some adrenaline and cortisol.

Time was I would have hit the bottle instead of the road.

I might do the Gwent League too although seriously down on training due to house move and illness. Nevermind, got to start somewhere.

I find the climb up to the Cotswold Way is fine, I used to live quite close to the bottom of the climb in Weston. My prefered route up is across the Weston Rec Playing Fields (off Penn Hill Road), up the short steep climb there then flatish along to Pendean Farm (at the top of Deanhill Lane) and then the second half of the climb to Kelston Roundhill. I don't use the route for any speed work, just long steady runs. One of the disadvantages of living in Bath is the hills in most directions.

There's a race up there in November: The Bath Hilly Half. It's certainly a challenging course hehe

So, did anyone else get into London?

My 5th year of trying and I get a place, but I've entered Brighton for next year on the assumption I wouldn't get into London. So a deferral of one will be requested!

Any general advice on training / opinions on whether a sub 3.15 is doable by April next year? I'm currently around a 1 hr 40 minute half pace in training, but have been doing triathlon for the last couple of years so haven't run a marathon distance for a while.

I did a half ironman a few weeks ago (5 hr 15 mins), and ran a hilly half 2 weeks ago in sub 2 (top 10% of field), and I'm doing a very hilly offroad 24km this weekend which I would hope to come in sub 2.30.

In other words, I don't really do road running!
Yes :-) 5th attempt also, need to start doing lots more running then as I only do as necessary for triathlon at the moment. Doing Maidstone half in two weeks so that should give me an idea of where I'm at running only.

What is putting you off the Garmin? I have a forerunner 305 and I've been pleased with it, only fault being it had list its beep recently which apparently is a common fault.

Got mine over a year ago for about £90 which looking around now still seems a terrific price.

Only thing is I never actually use the heart rate monitor.

That looks interesting thanks, no heart rate but thinking about it maybe it's not that important.

Hard group session this morning. I was dead at the end.

5x1 mile (all off road, quite muddy, a few hills etc) off 75secs rest average was 5:48 then a few minutes rest and 4x150m. Was tough!

Thanks, it has taken a year! The 1st time I ran one last September I ran in 21:15. I wasn't new to running then but have increased the no. of runs over the last year. Target 19 mins for next September although I think this will be much harder.
